Million Miler program

The Million Miler program, a part of the MileagePlus^® program, is for members who have flown a million miles or more on our airline. Once you reach this extraordinary milestone, you’ll get lifetime Premier^® status as a thank you for your long-term loyalty.

Lifetime Premier status

Premier status earned as a part of the Million Miler program never expires, even if you fly less often in the future.

Status level is based on the total number of miles you’ve flown* on eligible United- and United Express^®-operated flights. You can check your lifetime miles balance at any time by logging in to your MileagePlus account.

Companion benefit

All members who have one million lifetime flight miles or more have the option to either select their own companion or become the companion of another Million Miler. Million milers who are already companions cannot choose a companion of their own. Companion benefits are available on an annual, not lifetime, basis.

As a Million Miler, you can extend Premier status to your companion, who is your spouse, significant other or a person who resides at the same home address, based on your MileagePlus profile information. Your companion will enjoy the rewarding perks of Premier membership**. Companions receive their sponsors highest earned status during the applicable program year.

Adding a companion

Million Milers who are selecting a companion for the first time, or do not currently have a companion relationship on their account, may select a companion for the current year at any time. The person you have invited to be your companion will be immediately notified via the email in their MileagePlus® Profile. No response is required to accept; however, they will have up to 14 days from the invitation date to decline the nomination. If declined, you may not nominate the same person as companion again for the same year. Your companion relationship will be renewed annually unless you submit a change.

Changing your sponsorship or companion selection

You can change or remove your Million Miler companion or decide to be selected as a companion of another Million Miler annually between September 1 and November 30. All change requests must be made by November 30 and will take effect early January of the following year.

Your old companion will continue to receive your eligible Premier status through January 31 of the next year. Starting February 1 their status will be based on their individual account activity.

Lifetime flight miles are based on the flight distance of eligible paid United- and United Express®-operated flights you’ve flown since enrollment in the MileagePlus program. Flight distance is defined as the miles scheduled for a specific flight, as determined solely by United.

The way we calculate miles has changed over the years. To bring everyone to the same starting point, we recounted the miles in every MileagePlus account in 2011 and added extra Elite Qualifying Miles (EQM). All miles earned on Copa Airlines before July 1, 2015, are included in your lifetime miles balance. Any flights taken on Copa Airlines after this date do not count towards Million Miler status. We may recalculate your balance in the future if the MileagePlus program changes.

No, for companion nominations made on or after September 18, 2024, we only allow members to establish one companion relationship per Million Miler account at a time for a given program year. Million Milers can decide annually if they would like to select a companion themselves or be designated as a companion of another Million Miler. Changes can be made between September 1 and November 30 and will be effective in early January of the following calendar year.

If you have more than one existing companion relationship in 2024, these relationships will only be valid through December 31, 2024. For the 2025 program year, you can select your companion or be selected by another Million Miler as their companion from September 18 through November 30, 2024.

As of January 1, 2025, you will only be able to have one companion relationship per Million Miler account; and you can either choose to select a companion or be the companion to another Million Miler, but not both.

Yes, all individuals selected as companions will be immediately notified at the email address on their MileagePlus account. They will have up to 14 days after the invitation date to decline the invitation. Members who decline an invitation may not be sponsored by the same Million Miler again for the same program year.

Companion eligibility:

A companion must be a spouse, significant other or person who resides at same home address, based on MileagePlus profile information.
Your companion must be enrolled as a MileagePlus member under their own name.
Companions cannot already be the companion of another Million Miler, or if they are also a Million Miler, they may not currently have a companion of their own.
Companions added on or after September 18, 2024, can decline a companion invitation from a Million Miler within 14 days of initial selection. Once declined, the Million Miler may not select the same companion again for the same year.
If an individual declines more than one companion nomination in a year, United reserves the right to identify their account as ineligible to receive additional companion nominations for such year.

If your lifetime flight miles balance is one million miles or more, you are considered a Million Miler.

Lifetime flight miles are accrued for Million Miler qualification based the flight distance on paid United- and United Express-operated flights. Flight distance is defined as the miles scheduled for a specific flight, as determined by United in its sole discretion. Members who are traveling on award tickets do not earn lifetime flight miles.

Million Milers earn annual Premier status benefits for themselves for life. With respect to each MileagePlus program year, a Million Miler may nominate one companion to have Premier status during such program year in accordance with these terms and conditions.

A companion is defined as a spouse, significant other or person who resides at same home address, based on MileagePlus profile information. Your companion must be an enrolled member of the MileagePlus program under his or her own name and may not already be the companion of another Million Miler. Companion benefits are nontransferable. No changes are allowed to any companion designation other than during designated periods each year as established by United.

With respect to companion nominations made on or after September 18, 2024, Million Milers may either (i) nominate a companion, or (ii) be the companion to another Million Miler, but not both. A Million Miler who is the companion of another Million Miler may not also nominate a companion themselves for the applicable year. A Million Miler who nominates a companion may not also be the companion of another Million Miler for the applicable year.

A companion of a Million Miler will have the Million Miler’s earned Premier status during the applicable program year.

If a Million Miler currently holds a trial or temporary Premier status that is higher than their earned status, such status shall not be extended to a companion.

If a Million Miler companion earns a higher Premier status than the Million Miler, the Million Miler’s Premier status will not change.

Changes to companion nominations may be made only during the period from September 1- November 30 of the current year. Such change will become effective in early January of the immediately subsequent year.

Eligible designated companions will automatically renew for the immediately subsequent year unless the Million Miler notifies United of non-renewal between September 1- November 30 of the current year.

Companions nominated on or after September 18, 2024, may decline a nomination from a Million Miler only within 14 days of the date of nomination. Once declined, the Million Miler may not nominate the same person as companion again for the same year.

If, in any year, a Million Miler nominates more than one individual as a companion who declines such nomination, United reserves the right to identify the Million Miler’s account as ineligible to make subsequent companion nominations for such year.

If an individual declines more than one companion nomination in any year, United reserves the right to identify their account as ineligible to receive subsequent companion nominations for such year.

Companion benefits are available on an annual, not lifetime, basis. Companion benefits expire upon the death of the Million Miler, upon closure of the Million Miler’s MileagePlus account or upon failure of the companion to meet the eligibility requirements, including, but not limited to, as a result of divorce or separation from the Million Miler, or for a violation of these rules, the MileagePlus rules or the Contract of Carriage.

Companions who are awarded Premier Platinum, Premier 1K or higher status are not eligible for PlusPoints, unless they reach the published Premier qualification thresholds themselves.

Companions will receive their own individual Premier credentials via the United mobile app and do not need to travel with the nominating Million Miler to use the Premier benefits.

The Million Miler program is a part of the MileagePlus program and is offered at the discretion of United. United has the right to terminate the Million Miler program, in whole or in part, or to change the terms, benefits, conditions of participation, qualification criteria or mileage levels, in whole or in part, at any time, with or without notice, even though changes may affect the value of Million Miler status levels or benefits already accumulated.
