Questions About Earning Miles

Will I earn miles based on the MileagePlus status I have when I purchase the ticket or the status I have when I travel?

For each flight, you will earn miles based on your MileagePlus status and the MileagePlus program rules in effect on the date of travel.

Will I earn award miles for the taxes and fees paid on a ticket?

No. You will earn award miles only on the base fare plus carrier-imposed surcharges paid, but not on any government-imposed taxes and fees. The price displayed when purchasing a ticket on united.com includes up to a 7.5% U.S. Federal Transportation Tax on the base amount of the fare on itineraries wholly within the United States. This tax also applies to certain itineraries between the United States and Canada or Mexico. You will not earn PQD or award miles for the full amount of the displayed price for these itineraries because the U.S. Federal Transportation tax is not eligible to earn PQD or miles.

Will I earn award miles if someone else pays for my ticket?

Yes, the member who travels will earn the miles, not the member who purchases the ticket.

Where can I see how many miles I earn for a flight?

You will be able to see how many award miles you earn for each flight on your monthly MileagePlus statement.

Will I earn award miles when I pay for United travel products or charges for optional services?

No, you will not earn award miles for payment toward United travel products (such as Economy Plus® seating, United ClubSM membership or one-time pass, Award Accelerator® or Premier AcceleratorSM) or other charges (such as checked baggage service charges, MileagePlus Upgrade Award co-pays or reservation change fees).

How many award miles will I earn if I buy a ticket in a currency other than U.S. dollars?

For tickets purchased in a currency other than U.S. dollars, we will convert the purchase to U.S. dollars using an industry standard exchange rate and then calculate the number of miles you will earn.

Will I earn award miles if I purchase a ticket using an electronic travel certificate or another type of dollar-value credit as a form of payment?

Yes. For eligible tickets, when a dollar-value credit is applied as a form of payment for some or all of the ticket purchase, your award mile earning will be based on the base fare plus carrier-imposed surcharge amount quoted before applying the credit.

Will I earn award miles if I purchase a ticket using a discount code (such as a percent-off or dollar-off certificate or offer code)?

Yes. When a discount (such as percent-off or dollar-off certificate or offer code) is applied, it adjusts the base fare to reflect a new discounted price. Your award mile earning will be based on this new base fare along with any carrier-imposed surcharges.

Will I earn award miles if I purchase a ticket using a companion certificate or buy-one-get-one-free promotion?

Yes, but only the primary paid ticket will earn award miles, not the companion or secondary ticket.

Will I still earn bonus award miles with my U.S.-based or international United MileagePlus credit card?

Yes. For example, United MileagePlus Explorer Card members earn two award miles for each $1 spent on tickets purchased from United. Learn about our credit card partners
