How it works
The TSA will determine your eligibility for expedited screening prior to each flight and will embed this information in the barcode of your boarding pass. Eligible customers who are traveling from or through a participating airport will see the TSA pre-screening logo on their mobile boarding passes and on boarding passes printed at home or from airport check-in kiosks. Currently, boarding passes printed at the check-in counter do not display the TSA pre-screening logo. This capability will be added at a later date.
On mobile boarding passes, the TSA pre-screening logo will appear in the top right corner above the barcode. On printed boarding passes, the TSA pre-screening logo will appear directly above the eligible passenger’s name.
When you arrive at a participating airport, go to the designated security checkpoint, where the TSA agent will scan your boarding pass and direct you to the assigned pre-screening lane if you are eligible for that flight.
In the pre-screening lane, you may no longer need to remove the following items:
- Shoes (some, such as steel-toed shoes, may require removal)
- 3-1-1 compliant bag from your carry-on (all liquid restrictions still apply)
- Laptop from your bag (if electronics are stacked on top of each other, they require removal)
- Light outerwear or jacket
- Belt (large belt buckles may require removal)
Please note: The TSA uses random and unpredictable security measures. Therefore, you are not guaranteed expedited screening for every flight, even if you have applied to the program.
How to participate
To be considered for this program, you must be a U.S. citizen, or a Canadian citizen who is a member of NEXUS, and in order to submit your TSA pre-screening application through united.com, you must be a MileagePlus member.
Select members of participating airlines’ frequent flyer programs and members of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Trusted Traveler programs, including Global EntryTM, NEXUS and SENTRI, are most likely to be eligible for expedited screening. Upon request, MileagePlus provides eligible Global ServicesSM, Premier® 1K® and Premier Platinum members a payment code to be used as form of payment for the fee for new Global Entry applications.
U.S. citizens currently enrolled in CBP Trusted Traveler programs, and Canadian citizens currently enrolled in NEXUS, can participate by providing their CBP-assigned PASS ID number (located in their GOES account online and in the top left-hand corner of their membership card) in the “Known Traveler Number” field when booking travel reservations. CBP Trusted Traveler participants can also add their PASS ID number to their MileagePlus profile in the “Known Traveler Number” field to have their number automatically sent to the TSA when booking reservations.
The TSA manages and operates this pre-screening program. Please visit the TSA website or contact the TSA for additional details and answers to questions about the program.
