Excess baggage embargo

Excess Baggage to/from the following destinations will be accepted as noted below.

During an excess baggage embargo, when no excess baggage is accepted: one box, instead of one free bag; maximum 50 pounds (23 kg) and 62 linear inches (158 cm) (total length + width + height) will be accepted free of charge. Exception: one box is accepted on ExpressJet Airlines, Inc. doing business as United Express® with destinations to the Caribbean, Central America and Mexico, instead of one bag; maximum 50 pounds and 42 linear inches (107 cm).

Baggage exceeding the allowable size (62 linear inches/158 cm) (total length + width + height) will be accepted as noted below.

The following items of sporting equipment will not be accepted during an excess baggage embargo when no excess baggage is allowed: bicycles, hang gliders, pole vaults, surfboards, wakeboards and windsurfing boards.

Permanent baggage embargo

The following cities do not allow excess baggage or oversized baggage at any time:

  • Havana, Cuba (HAV)
  • Tegucigalpa, Honduras (TGU)

The following cities do not permit checked baggage in excess of 70 pounds (32 kg):

  • Athens, Greece (ATH)
  • Auckland, New Zealand (AKL)
  • Birmingham, United Kingdom (BHX)
  • Brussels, Belgium (BRU)
  • Edinburgh, United Kingdom (EDI)
  • Glasgow, United Kingdom (GLA)
  • Havana, Cuba (HAV)
  • Lima, Peru (LIM)
  • London, United Kingdom (LHR)
  • Manchester, United Kingdom (MAN)
  • Melbourne, Australia (MEL)
  • Sydney, Australia (SYD)

Customers traveling to, from or through the following cities are limited to three excess pieces of checked baggage weighing up to 50 pounds. Oversized baggage is not permitted.

  • Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (GIG)
  • Sao Paulo, Brazil (GRU)

Temporary excess baggage embargo: December 10, 2017 through January 5, 2018

Customers traveling to, from or through the following cities are limited to three excess pieces of checked baggage weighing up to 99.9 pounds. Oversized baggage is not permitted.

  • Bogota, Colombia (BOG)
  • Guatemala City, Guatemala (GUA)
  • Leon/Guanajuato, Mexico (BJX)
  • Managua, Nicaragua (MGA)
  • Monterrey, Mexico (MTY)
  • Panama City, Panama (PTY)

Customers traveling to, from or through the following cities are limited to one excess piece of checked baggage weighing up to 99.9 pounds. Oversized baggage is not permitted.

Customers traveling to, from or through the following city may bring two standard bags weighing up to 99.9 pounds but are not permitted excess baggage or oversized baggage.

  • San Salvador, El Salvador (SAL)

Embargo fees for select destinations

From June 20, 2017, to August 9, 2017, as well as December 8, 2017, to December 24, 2017, customers will be charged $25 for a first checked bag permitted to the following destinations:
