Basic Economy
Basic Economy tickets are a great way to save on travel. Most of the inflight services, like food and entertainment, are the same as standard Economy, but there are some restrictions. Here’s what you need to know about flying in Basic Economy.
Bag rules

Personal item
You can travel with one personal item, like a shoulder bag, backpack, or laptop bag that fits under the seat in front of you.
If your bag does not fit under the seat, you'll have to check it at the gate and pay a $65 fee.

Carry-on bag
On most trips , you'll have to check your carry-on bag in the airport lobby. The fee starts at $40.
Carry-on bags are free on flights to South America, across the Atlantic and on international flights across the Pacific.

Checked bags
On most flights, you'll have to pay bag fees. You cannot gate check bags for free.
On international flights across the Pacific, except to China and Tahiti, you’ll get one free checked bag.
Free carry-on bags for Premier members and cardmembers on every flight
MileagePlus® Premier® members can bring one carry-on bag for free. Travelers on the same reservation will also get the benefit.
Eligible primary cardmembers of United MileagePlus co-branded cards* can also bring one carry-on bag for free. Up to eight travelers on the same reservation will also get the benefit. You must use your card to book the flights and have Priority Boarding to get free carry-on bags.

Personal items
If you have a personal item, present it at the check-in counter with the rest of your bags. We need to make sure it meets size and height requirements.
Boarding group
In most cases, you’ll board in Group 6. There are some exceptions. Visit the boarding process page for more information.
