Moveable aisle armrests

United Economy® seats with moveable armrests are identified by aircraft type, tail number and location. All new Boeing aircraft will incorporate moveable armrests in the United Economy section, except for rows designated as an exit row and the bulkhead. The fleet type is indicated in our reservation system. Actual aircraft number assignment is usually available 48 to 24 hours before scheduled departure.

Armrest release mechanisms vary by type of seats used on the aircraft. All release mechanisms are discretely hidden as a safety precaution to prevent unwanted release during takeoff and landing. They can be found underneath the armrest covers or on the inside of the armrests.

Some release mechanisms are located underneath the rubber armrest cover at the bottom edge near the pivot point where the armrest is attached to the seat frame. To find the release, feel for an indent on the bottom edge of the rubber armrest cover, press the button and move the armrest upward. To lock back into place, move the armrest back to its "down" position.

Other release mechanisms are located between the seatback cushion and the inside of the armrest. To locate, place your hand between the armrest and the seatback cushion at the armrest pivot point. Once found, press the button and move the armrest upward. It will lock in place when returned to the original position.

Customers who opt to pre-board have priority to have their wheelchair stowed in an onboard closet or space upon request. When requested during pre-boarding, stowage of the first wheelchair presented takes priority over other customer, crew or company materials. All United aircraft have space to accommodate at least one adult-sized wheelchair.

Lavatories

Our wide-body 767, 777 and 787 aircraft are equipped with an onboard wheelchair accessible lavatory. The lavatories on our single-aisle 737-700, 737-800, 737-900, 757-200, 757-300, Airbus 319 and Airbus 320 aircraft are equipped with a privacy curtain and handrails.

Cargo compartments

Powered equipment will not be disassembled, including leaving the batteries attached, whenever the cart and/or wheelchair will fit upright through the aircraft bin door. If the size of the aircraft bin door prohibits this, airport personnel may ask you for instructions on how to disassemble your equipment. If the mobility aid meets all safety and dangerous goods requirements, then the ability of the mobility aid to fit through the aircraft bin door will determine its acceptance by aircraft type. The following chart shows the maximum bin door width of our current fleet.
