FAQs

  • We’re permanently getting rid of change fees for most Economy and premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S., or between the U.S. and Mexico or the Caribbean. Travel within the U.S. includes Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. It doesn’t include Guam.

  • We’re allowing changes without fee for both types of travel if the ticket is issued by December 31, 2020.

  • If you booked a flight on or after March 3, 2020, there won’t be any change fees due to travel waivers already in place.

If you booked a flight before March 3, 2020, it depends on your travel dates. If you booked to travel between March 3, 2020, and December 31, 2020, there also won’t be any change fees due to travel waivers already in place.

  • There’s no limit to how many times you can change your flight, but you’ll have to pay for any fare difference each time.

  • No. If you cancel your flight and don’t choose a new one right away, you’ll get a flight credit that you can use up to one year from your original ticket issue date.

  • No. If your new flight costs less, you’ll be able to change for free but will not receive a refund of the fare difference.

  • Yes. There won’t be change fees for award travel as long as the ticket is in Economy or a premium cabin and you’re traveling within the U.S. or between the U.S. and the Caribbean or Mexico.

  • Yes, but only for travel within 30 days. This applies for both domestic and international travel.

  • Yes, we’ll still have refundable domestic fares that appear under the “Flexible” column when you book a flight.

  • Yes. Beginning January 1, 2021, any customer can stand by for an earlier flight for free. If a seat is available for that flight, we’ll assign you one before departure.

If your trip has a connection, you’ll have to stand by for each flight individually. If you check a bag for your original flight, we’ll work to load your bag onto your new flight, but it may not make the standby flight.

  • Beginning January 1, 2021, if you’re a MileagePlus Premier member, you have even more flexibility and may be able to confirm a seat on a different flight for no cost at all. The new flight will need to have the same origin and destination and be within 24 hours of the originally scheduled flight. The same ticketed fare class will also need to be for sale for you to make the same-day change. If the same fare class is not available, you’ll have to pay the difference.

For all other customers that would like to make a same-day change and confirm a seat, a fare differential may apply.

  • Tickets: For tickets issued March 3 through March 31, 2020, customers will be permitted to change without paying a change fee to a flight of equal or lesser value for travel up to 24 months from the original ticket issue date. For tickets issued between April 1, 2020, and December 31, 2020, customers will be permitted to change without paying a change fee to a flight of equal or lesser value for travel up to 12 months from the original ticket issue date.

If the new flight is priced higher, the customer may change for no change fee but must pay the fare difference. If the new flight is priced lower, the customer may change without paying a change fee but no residual value will be given.

Changes/Cancellations: If the customer decides to change or cancel the flight they booked between March 3, 2020 and March 31, 2020, they can retain the value of the ticket to be applied to a new ticket without a change fee for travel up to 24 months from the original ticket issue date. If the customer decides to change or cancel the flight they booked between April 1, 2020, and December 31, 2020, they can retain the value of the ticket to be applied to a new ticket without a change fee for travel up to 12 months from the original ticket issue date. Any changes or cancellation must occur prior to ticketed travel date.

Fare Validity: This applies to all tickets, all UA fare types, all destinations, all points-of-sale, all travel dates available for sale, provided ticket number starts with 016.

Miscellaneous: Fares, fees, rules and offers are subject to change without notice. Seats are capacity-controlled and may not be available on all flights or days. Some fares are non-refundable except during the first 24 hours after purchase. Other restrictions may apply.
