How you can keep your miles active
It takes only a few minutes to keep your miles active.
Remember, miles expire 18 months from your last activity date. View your account summary to find out when your miles will expire.
To keep your miles active, you must earn or redeem miles prior to your mileage expiration date. Please note that in some cases, it can take 6-8 weeks for the miles to credit to your account.*
What are my options?
- Fly United or one of our airline partners before your mileage expiration date. Book now and be sure to include your MileagePlus® number in your reservation.
- You can also earn miles by using a MileagePlus credit card, staying at a partner hotel, renting with one of our car partners and more. Learn more about all the ways to earn miles.
Using miles also keeps your account active, and you have several choices right at your fingertips – book for award travel, hotel stays, renting a car and more. You can even use miles as a donation to a charity. Learn more about using miles.
* If you choose to earn miles through one of our partners, it is important to note that it may take up to eight weeks for the miles to credit to your account. But don't worry. If your miles do expire after the transaction but before the miles are credited to your account, your balance will be automatically reinstated 7-10 days after the transaction credits, as long as the transaction date was prior to the mileage expiration date.
Buy or transfer miles
Buying or transferring miles is another way to keep your account active. If you want to redeem an award sooner, you can buy miles online at any time by signing in to your MileagePlus account. Miles start at $35 per 1,000 miles, with a minimum purchase of 2,000 miles.
You can easily transfer miles from your account to another MileagePlus member. Mileage transfers cost $7.50 per 500 miles, plus a processing fee of $30 per transaction.
