Starting in 2020, we’ll begin automatically assigning seats to travelers on the upgrade list. If you’ve signed up for day-of-travel notifications and receive an upgrade, we’ll send you a text message or email asking you to refresh your boarding pass on the United app to view your new seat assignment and wait to board. Visit our Standby FAQ page for more information.
All about upgrades
Added comfort especially for MileagePlus members
MileagePlus® upgrades are a valuable feature of your membership that can make your flight experience that much more comfortable and luxurious. Here, you’ll find everything you need to know about upgrading your flight.
Upgrade companions and sponsoring upgrades
PlusPoints upgrades and MileagePlus Upgrade Awards
MileagePlus members can use a MileagePlus Upgrade Award for another traveler, and Premier members can use PlusPoints for someone else, even if they are not traveling on the same reservation.
Complimentary Premier Upgrades
One companion traveling on the same reservation as a Premier member is eligible for Complimentary Premier Upgrades on select flights, and can be confirmed with the same priority as the Premier member, even on the day of departure. This benefit does not apply to companions traveling on award tickets.
If a reservation includes three or more travelers, and only one is not a Premier member, the Complimentary Premier Upgrades will follow the lowest Premier status level in the reservation. If two or more travelers on the reservation are not Premier members, the reservation is not eligible for Complimentary Premier Upgrades unless one or more travelers are moved to another reservation. Travelers can contact the United Customer Contact Center for help.
Star Alliance Upgrade Awards
You may use your miles to sponsor a Star Alliance Upgrade Award for up to four people who are traveling on the same itinerary. You do not need to be traveling with the passengers to request the upgrade awards and you can request upgrades for travelers with a different last name than yours.
