Premier qualifying points: FAQ and Terms and conditions

Earning and tracking PQP

  • You will earn PQP on the following:

    • Most flights operated by United and United Express®
    • Most flights operated by a Star Alliance partner airline and connecting partners
    • Most flights operated by Air Dolomiti, Azul, Edelweiss, Eurowings, and Olympic Air
    • Most Economy Plus® purchases
    • Most preferred seating purchases
    • Paid upgrades
    • MileagePlus Upgrade Award co-pays

You earn PQP for the base fare and carrier-imposed surcharges on United-operated flights or tickets beginning with 016 if the flight is eligible for Premier credit. Additionally, members can earn PQP on flights ticketed and operated by our Star Alliance partners.

For flights operated by a Star Alliance partner, connecting partner, or Air Dolomiti, Azul, Edelweiss, Eurowings, or Olympic Air (tickets not beginning with 016), the flight will earn PQP based on a partner-specific formula, which is award miles* divided by either 5 or 6, depending on the partner. Please see more on how to earn Premier qualifying credit with our partners.

Certain specialty tickets, including but not limited to unpublished, consolidator, group, tour and opaque fares, do not earn PQP. We will credit the account of the member who travels, not the member who purchases the ticket, like we do with PQF.

*Please note award miles is your base award miles earning plus your fare class bonus award miles earning, if eligible. Premier bonus miles earned are not included within this calculation and are ineligible for Premier qualifying points accrual.

  • The ability to earn spend credit on bulk tickets is new to the Premier program in 2020. For bulk ticket types operated by United, you will earn PQP according to a formula: award miles earned divided by 5. For more information on how award miles are earned for bulk ticket types, please see Earning miles on United flights.

  • PQP will count toward qualification in the year when you travel, not necessarily in the year when you purchase the ticket, as long as the flight is eligible to earn PQP.

  • You will earn PQP for Economy Plus purchases, whether a one-time purchase or a subscription

PQP from one-time Economy Plus purchases credit to the member who travels in Economy Plus seating. PQP from Economy Plus subscriptions credit to the holder of the subscription within 48 hours of payment. The PQP you earn will be equal to the price of the purchase or subscription.

  • No. The only non-ticket purchases that may earn PQP are Economy Plus, preferred seating purchases, paid upgrades, and MileagePlus Upgrade Award co-pays.

  • No. Government-imposed taxes, fees and charges do not count toward PQP.

  • No matter where you purchase your ticket, flights operated by United and United Express are eligible for PQP, even when marketed by another airline or issued on another airline’s ticket.

When flying on a published revenue ticket operated by a Star Alliance partner, connecting partner, MileagePlus partner airline, or Air Dolomiti, Azul, Edelweiss, Eurowings, or Olympic Air, you will earn PQP.

All tickets issued through United channels, such as united.com, are issued as United tickets (ticket number starting with "016"). As always, be sure to include your MileagePlus number in your reservation.

Certain specialty tickets, including but not limited to unpublished, consolidator, group, tour and opaque fares, do not earn PQP. Find additional information about earning PQP when you fly in the PQP terms and conditions.

  • No. Eligible flights can be purchased with any form of payment accepted by United, but members should keep in mind the new program allows for earning PQP based off of credit card spend on MileagePlus/Chase co-branded credit cards. For more information, please see our qualification page.

  • Yes. When a ticket is purchased and a dollar-value credit is applied as a form of payment for some or all of the ticket value, the base fare and carrier-imposed surcharge amount quoted before applying the credit will count toward PQP for eligible flights.

  • Yes. When a discount (such as percent-off or dollar-off certificate or code) is applied, it adjusts the base fare to reflect a new discounted price. This new base fare is displayed along with any carrier-imposed surcharges, and this total amount will count toward PQP on eligible flights. Please check your ticket receipt for the discounted base fare and the carrier-imposed surcharges.

  • Yes, but PQP will not credit to your account automatically. Please call 1-800-UNITED-1 (1-800-864-8331) to request PQP credit. For general questions about missing credit (award miles, PQP and PQF), call 1-800-421-4655.

  • Yes. Basic Economy tickets are eligible to receive PQP but are ineligible to earn PQF.

  • Your PQP balance will display alongside your PQF balance on your “My Account” page on united.com. The PQP you earn for each eligible flight and eligible purchases will show on your “Account Activity” page. You can also track your Premier qualifying activity at mystatus.united.com.

PQP from eligible flights and ancillary purchases like Economy Plus or paid upgrades will usually credit to your account two days after you take your flight.

PQP from Economy Plus subscription purchases will usually credit to your account two days after purchase, or for recipients of a gifted Economy Plus subscription, two days after activation. If you have an existing Economy Plus subscription, PQP will credit two days after the renewal is purchased.

  • We use an industry-standard method to determine the portion of the ticket’s base fare and carrier-imposed surcharge value to allocate to each eligible flight segment.
