Premier qualification: FAQs and terms and conditions

Earning and tracking PQP

  • You will earn PQP on the following:

    • Flights operated by United® and United Express®
    • Flights operated by a Star AllianceTM partner airline and connecting partners
    • Flights operated by Air Dolomiti, Azul, Edelweiss, Eurowings, Discover Airlines, Virgin Australia and Olympic Air
    • Economy Plus® seat purchases or Economy Plus subscriptions
    • Preferred seat purchases
    • Paid upgrades on flights operated by United® and United Express®
    • MileagePlus Upgrade Awards
    • Award flights operated by United® and United Express®
    • Eligible co-branded credit cards

If the flight is eligible for Premier credit, you’ll automatically earn PQP for the base fare and carrier-imposed surcharges on United and United Express operated flights or tickets beginning with 016. For each U.S. dollar you spend (base fare + carrier-imposed surcharges) on United flights or flight tickets issued by United, you’ll earn one PQP. It’s also possible to earn PQP by redeeming MileagePlus miles for United or United Express award flights, or by using one of our eligible co-branded credit cards for everyday purchases.

For flights operated by a Star Alliance partner, connecting partner, or Air Dolomiti, Azul, Edelweiss, Eurowings, Eurowings Discover, Virgin Australia and Olympic Air on tickets that do not begin with 016, the flight will earn PQP based on a partner-specific formula, which is award miles* divided by either 5 or 6, depending on the partner. Please see more on how to earn Premier qualifying credit with our partners.

Certain specialty tickets, including but not limited to unpublished, consolidator, group, tour and opaque fares do not earn PQP. We will credit the account of the member who travels, not the member who purchases the ticket, like we do with PQF.

Starting January 1, 2023, PQP may be earned on the miles portion of MileagePlus Upgrade Awards (MUA) in addition to the PQP earned based on the cash portion of the MUA co-pay fee. PQP earned from MUA may take up to one week after departure to post to your account. PQP earned from miles redeemed and PQP earned from the co-pay fee will post to your account separately and may post at different times.

*Please note award miles is your base award miles earning plus your fare class bonus award miles earning, if eligible. Premier bonus miles earned are not included within this calculation and are ineligible for PQP accrual.

  • For bulk ticket types operated by United, you’ll earn PQP according to a formula: award miles earned divided by 5. You can find more information on how award miles are earned for bulk ticket types by visiting Earning miles on United flights.

  • If the flight is eligible to earn PQP, it will count toward qualification in the year you travel in, not necessarily in the year you purchase the ticket.

For example, if you purchase a flight in 2022 for travel in 2023, your PQP will count toward your 2023 Premier qualification.

  • You’ll earn PQP for Economy Plus® purchases, whether that’s a one-time purchase or a subscription. You’ll also earn PQP for preferred seat purchases.

PQP from one-time Economy Plus or preferred seat purchases will be credited to the member who travels in the purchased seat.

MileagePlus members who hold an Economy Plus subscription can earn PQP for the price of the subscription purchase. In the event the subscription is gifted to a recipient other than the purchaser, the recipient is given PQP credit for the price of the subscription purchase when the subscription is activated. PQP from Economy Plus subscriptions will be credited to the holder of the subscription within 48 hours of payment.

The PQP you earn will be equal to the price of the purchase or subscription.

PQP will be earned at a rate of 1 PQP for each U.S. dollar spent (excluding taxes and fees) or 1 PQP for every 100 MileagePlus miles redeemed for the EconomyPlus or preferred seat purchase

  • No. The only non-ticket purchases you can earn PQP on are Economy Plus, preferred seating purchases, paid upgrades, and MileagePlus Upgrade Awards.

  • No. Government-imposed taxes, fees and charges do not count toward PQP.

  • No matter where you purchase your ticket, flights operated by United and United Express are eligible for PQP, even when marketed by another airline or issued on another airline’s ticket. You can also earn PQP by redeeming MileagePlus miles for United or United Express award flights or by using one of our eligible co-branded credit cards for everyday purchases.

When flying on a published revenue ticket operated by a Star Alliance partner, connecting partner, MileagePlus partner airline, or Air Dolomiti, Azul, Edelweiss, Eurowings, Eurowings Discover, Virgin Australia and Olympic Air, you will earn PQP.

All tickets issued through United channels, such as united.com or the United app, are issued as United tickets (ticket number starting with "016"). As always, be sure to include your MileagePlus number in your reservation.

Certain specialty tickets, including but not limited to unpublished, consolidator, group, tour and opaque fares, do not earn PQP. You can find additional information about earning PQP when you fly in the PQP terms and conditions.

  • No. Eligible flights can be purchased with any form of payment accepted by United, but members should keep in mind that they may earn additional PQP from credit card spend on MileagePlus/Chase co-branded credit cards. For more information, please see our qualification page.

  • Yes. When a ticket is purchased and a dollar-value credit is applied as a form of payment for some or all of the ticket value, the base fare and carrier-imposed surcharge amount quoted before applying the credit will count toward PQP for eligible flights.

  • Yes. When a discount (such as percent-off or dollar-off certificate or code) is applied, it adjusts the base fare to reflect a new discounted price. This new base fare is displayed along with any carrier-imposed surcharges, and this total amount will count toward PQP on eligible flights. Please check your ticket receipt for the discounted base fare and the carrier-imposed surcharges.

  • Yes, but PQP will not credit to your account automatically. Please call 1-800-UNITED-1 (1-800-864-8331) to request PQP credit. For general questions about missing credit (award miles, PQP and PQF), call 1-800-421-4655.

  • Yes. Basic Economy tickets are eligible to receive PQP but are ineligible to earn PQF.

  • Your PQP balance will display alongside your PQF balance on your “My Account” page on united.com. The PQP you earn for each eligible flight and eligible purchases will show on your “Account Activity” page. You can also track your Premier qualifying activity at mystatus.united.com.

PQP from eligible flights and ancillary purchases like Economy Plus or paid upgrades will usually be credited to your account two days after you take your flight.

PQP from Economy Plus subscription purchases will usually credit to your account two days after purchase, or for recipients of a gifted Economy Plus subscription, two days after activation. If you have an existing Economy Plus subscription, PQP will credit two days after the renewal is purchased.

  • We use an industry-standard method to determine the portion of the ticket’s base fare and carrier-imposed surcharge value to allocate to each eligible flight segment.

  • Yes. PQP from seat purchases will count toward earning all Premier status levels including Premier 1K® status, either by a combination of PQP and PQF or PQP only.

PQP deposit

  • To give members a head start on their status goals, we will automatically deposit PQP into MileagePlus accounts based on the 2024 Premier status you reached at the end of 2023, regardless of how you received your status.

All members with Premier status as of February 1, 2024, will receive PQP deposits applied to their 2024 balances, according to their status level. Members who hold Trial status are not eligible.

  • We continue to value our loyal flyers and are happy to continue offering the PQP deposit. As our members have largely returned to travel we have adjusted the amount of the deposit to reflect this.

  • All members with Premier status as of February 1, 2024, except for those that hold Trial status, will receive a PQP deposit according to their Premier status level.

  • Premier members who hold Premier status as of February 1, 2024, will receive the same PQP deposit applied to their 2024 balances, according to their status level.

  • Yes. Million Milers will receive a PQP deposit based on their Premier status level as of February 1, 2024. Even if you didn’t fly in the last year, you will receive a PQP deposit based on your lifetime Premier status level.

  • You will receive a PQP deposit if you successfully qualified for Premier status based on the terms of your Premier Status Match Challenge before February 1, 2024. Members who hold Trial status or any members with a challenge in progress at the time the PQP deposit is awarded will not receive one.

  • Yes. If you took advantage of a personalized Premier status offer prior to February 1, 2024, you’ll receive a PQP deposit based on the Premier status level purchased. If you purchased through your personalized offer after that date, you will receive a PQP deposit based on the Premier status level you held on February 1, 2024.

  • Members will receive their PQP deposit in early February 2024.

Qualifying activity

  • Our program recognizes that every member earns status differently. We’ve made it easy to earn status based on your preferred activity, whether you fly on United, or fly on one of our 26 Star Alliance™ partners, frequently redeem MileagePlus miles for United award flights, or use one of our co-brand credit cards for everyday purchases.

  • Yes. All members must meet the PQP requirement to achieve Premier status.

  • It is possible to earn Premier status through PQP only, but you must meet a higher threshold of PQP. You can find details on the two different ways to earn Premier status below:

    • Earn status through a combination of PQF and PQP and fly at least four paid flights on United or United Express
    • Meet a higher threshold of PQP and fly at least four paid flights on United or United Express
  • We are aligning the way all of our members qualify for Premier status and have added new ways to earn PQP. Members can now earn PQP on flights ticketed and operated by our Star Alliance partners.

  • No.

  • No. The PQP requirement for Premier qualification will not affect any Premier status earned by being a Million Miler. However, if you are a Million Miler and want to qualify for a higher Premier status, the PQP qualification requirements will apply.

  • Yes. Any award ticket redeemed with MileagePlus miles operated by United or United Express is eligible to earn PQP and PQF.

  • No. Members must redeem MileagePlus miles on award flights through MileagePlus to earn PQP and PQF.

  • No. Only the ticketed passenger who completed the travel will earn PQP and PQF from the award ticket. The name of the ticketed passenger must match the name in the MileagePlus account entered on the reservation.

  • Members will earn PQP when they travel on award tickets based on the number of miles redeemed at a rate of 100 miles to 1 PQP. So, if you fly on an award ticket that required 10,000 miles, you will earn 100 PQP. Each flight segment on an itinerary will earn 1 PQF.

  • When an award itinerary includes both United and non-United operated segments, the PQP amount will be prorated based upon the distance flown for the United-operated segments only.

  • Yes. Award travel will count toward earning all Premier status levels including Premier 1K® status, either by a combination of PQP and PQF or PQP only.

  • Yes. You will now earn 1 PQP for every 100 miles you redeem on a Money + Miles ticket. This is in addition to the PQP you already earn on Money + Miles tickets on the portion of the base fare paid with money, excluding taxes and fees. You will also continue to earn 1 PQF per segment flown on eligible Money + Miles itineraries.

  • Yes. Starting January 1, 2023, PQP may be earned on the miles portion of MileagePlus Upgrade Awards (MUA) at a rate of 1 PQP for every 100 MileagePlus miles redeemed in addition to the PQP earned based on the cash portion of the MUA co-pay fee.

Miles redeemed for Star Alliance Upgrade Awards are not eligible to earn PQP.

  • Yes. PQP from MUA will count toward earning all Premier status levels including Premier 1K® status, either by a combination of PQP and PQF or PQP only.

  • No. Only award travel flown on or after January 1, 2023, is eligible to earn PQP and PQF. PQP and PQF from award tickets will be determined based upon the earn structure in effect at the time of travel, not at the time that air travel is purchased, booked or reserved, or the time that retro-credit is requested.
