Using United travel credits

We’re extending electronic travel certificates

To give you more flexibility, electronic travel certificates* are now valid for 24 months from the date they were issued. This includes all currently valid travel certificates and all new ones issued on or after April 1, 2020.

This change may not occur right away. We’d appreciate your patience as we work to make that happen.

*Does not include free travel authorization certificates.

A world of opportunities

Travel credits and certificates give you flexibility as you plan future trips. Here’s what to know about using an electronic travel certificate or future flight credit:

What's the difference between electronic travel certificates and future flight credit?

Electronic travel certificate

Electronic travel certificates can be used for travel on United and United Express® flights. You can’t use a certificate for Star Alliance™ flights or United-marketed flights operated by other airlines.

  • Release of liability

By accepting a travel certificate, you release United, the operating carrier, and their respective employees, agents and representatives from any and all liability, claims or damages resulting or arising from the matters relating to your flight, compensation therefore or any related complaint. This release does not apply to the extent it is contrary to an applicable law outside of the United States.

    Certificate terms and conditions

    1. Travel certificates are redeemable toward transportation on any flight operated by United Airlines, Inc. or United Express. Otherwise, they are not valid on flights operated by other airlines, including United marketed codeshare and Star Alliance flights.
    2. You may redeem or view travel certificate details at united.com by clicking on Deals & Offers, Promotional certificates, and entering the promotion code and PIN in the offer code box. You can also call United at 800-UNITED-1 (800-864-8331). A fee may apply for redemption via telephone. You will be asked to enter the last name of the certificate recipient. Certificates may not be redeemed through a travel agency.
    3. The promotion code and PIN must be presented at time of ticket purchase and expire 24 months from original date of issue, unless otherwise noted.
    4. Travel certificates have no cash value.
    5. Travel certificates will be honored in conjunction with prepaid tickets, fee-waived tickets, MileagePlus awards, tour packages or other service charges. You must pay for outstanding fees and ancillary purchases with a credit or debit card at time of purchase.
    6. If the face amount of a travel certificate exceeds the cost of the ticket for which it is surrendered, any residual amount will be applied to the same PIN for use toward another ticket until either the original issued amount is depleted, or the expiration date has been reached, whichever comes first.
    7. Travel certificates are not transferable and may not be sold, traded or bartered. However, the original recipient of a certificate may arrange travel for another person if done without selling or bartering the certificate. Any sale or barter of a certificate, or any offer to sell or enter into such a transaction, shall render a certificate null and void such that the certificate shall no longer be redeemable by any person, including the original recipient.
    8. Positive identification may be required when using a certificate toward the purchase of a ticket. United is not liable for loss, theft or unintended use of a certificate by a person other than the original recipient.
    9. United's Contract of Carriage applies to all travel on United Airlines and United Express.

Compensation FAQs

  •

Electronic travel certificates are travel credit given to customers from a United employee for situations including denied boarding instances, customer goodwill, a fare difference during an exchange, and for irregular operations. Future flight credits are credit for the same value of your ticket for the original route given to the same customer(s) who has canceled their flight.

Future flight credits are valid for the same amount as the original ticket purchased and can be applied to new flights. They have a lot of flexibility in routes as they can be used for travel on any United, United Express, or partner operated flights. Future flight credits must be used for travel within 12 months of the date your original ticket was purchased.

Electronic travel certificates also offer a lot of flexibility. You can use them to book a flight for anyone you’d like, and they can be used for travel up to 24 months from the date they’re issued. Electronic travel certificates must be used for United- or United Express-operated flights.
