Pay for your next flight with a combination of money and miles. Money + Miles is a great way to use miles to travel. Select this option when you don't have enough miles for an award flight or want to redeem miles on multiple trips. Choose the number of miles you want to redeem at checkout and pay for the rest of your ticket with money.
How to book
Money + Miles is available to all MileagePlus members with miles in their accounts. You can use it to buy tickets for yourself or someone else on United, United Express® and select partner airline flights. Money + Miles is a payment option for seats in every cabin, including Basic Economy on select flights.

Yes. Money + Miles is available on our international websites. You can pay for the money portion of your trip with USD or international currencies.
Yes, but it depends on the flight’s fare rules and the type of upgrade. You can only use money, Complimentary Premier Upgrades, PlusPoints or cash to upgrade tickets. Upgrade Awards are ineligible.
It depends. Some types of tickets do not allow changes.
If your ticket does allow changes and the new price is higher, you can pay the difference with money. If the new ticket price is lower, you’ll get a future flight credit.
You’ll get a full refund if you cancel within the first 24 hours of booking. The money portion will go back to the original form of payment and your miles will be returned to your account.
If you cancel after 24 hours, you may be able to get a future flight credit for the money portion of your ticket. For more information, visit the refund policies page.
Yes, but only on the part of the fare you paid for with money, excluding taxes and fees. Miles will be deposited into your account after the flight is complete.
Yes. All Money + Miles flights are operated by United or United Express. You can earn Premier qualifying flights (PQF) and Premier qualifying points (PQP) on Money + Miles flights. They also count towards the four-flight minimum you need to qualify for Premier status. The current rates are:
One PQP per dollar spent, excluding taxes and fees.
One PQP for every 100 miles you redeem.
- Money + Miles is a payment option offered exclusively to MileagePlus members during the booking process in some but not all channels which allows members to use miles as a form of payment for United, United Express and select partner airline flights using a combination of monetary payment and MileagePlus miles.
- Money + Miles prices shown in the flight search results page reflect the average price per passenger and are reflective of differences in pricing that may exist between passenger types (adult, child, etc.) The final selection of miles applied to the overall itinerary occurs at the checkout payment page.
- MileagePlus members must be signed in to their MileagePlus account to use Money + Miles payment option.
- Money + Miles bookings and tickets are subject to the fare rules applicable to the ticket purchased.
- Tickets can be canceled with no fee in accordance with the 24-hour flexible booking policy. Tickets paid for with Money + Miles cannot be changed within the 24-hour flexible booking period – the member must cancel the itinerary and make a new booking.
- Money + Miles is not offered on all fares. Refunds will only be provided in accordance with the rules of the applicable fare. The mileage portion of a Money + Miles purchase is a form of payment for refund purposes.
- A minimum redemption of MileagePlus miles is required for Money + Miles tickets. United reserves the right to change the minimum redemption levels at any time prior to booking.
- Miles used as a form of payment for a Money + Miles booking must be contributed from a single MileagePlus member’s account.
- Members can earn redeemable miles on the cash portion of the base fare paid, excluding any taxes and fees. Redeemable miles are only earned on flown tickets. Earning redeemable miles on other airline loyalty programs is not available.
- Accrual details:
- Premier qualifying points (PQP) are based on the cash portion of the base fare paid excluding taxes and fees. Starting on January 1, 2023, PQP will also be earned on the miles portion of the ticket at a rate of 1 PQP for every 100 miles redeemed on flight segments operated by United or United Express.
- Premier qualifying flights (PQF) are based on the segments flown if the ticket is eligible; 1 per segment flown.
- Minimum qualifying segments are based on the segments flown; 1 per segment flown if the ticket is eligible.
- Lifetime miles apply to the entire flown itinerary.
- United reserves the right to change the number of MileagePlus miles required for redemption and/or the price of the ticket, or to impose additional restrictions, prior to booking. Rates and eligibility may vary by origin, destination, point of sale, flight number, date, season, fare, cabin, United channel, member, member level, cardholder status or any combination thereof. Accordingly, any number of MileagePlus miles and cash values quoted are valid only at the time of booking.
- Money + Miles tickets are not upgradable with MileagePlus Upgrade Awards.
