Other United sustainability initiatives

Improving our facilities

We are investing in making our facilities more energy efficient. Our corporate headquarters in downtown Chicago achieved Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification, and we're installing sustainable design elements like energy-efficient lighting and mechanical systems in several of our United Club locations and airport terminals around the world. The new United terminals in Houston and San Francisco have also achieved LEED certification.

Recycling and responsibly managing waste

We have implemented a continuous-improvement review process to enhance our sustainability, waste reduction and fuel efficiency practices and evaluate the environmental impact of the products we use throughout our operations. Over the past seven years, we've recycled 27.8 million pounds of aluminum cans, paper and plastic from our flights and our facilities. And in 2014, we replaced the polystyrene cups used on board our aircraft with recyclable, hot beverage cups made from up to 50 percent recycled materials.
