Good management of our resources is part of our commitment to operating sustainably. We strive to identify new ways to conserve energy, improve our recycling in the air and on the ground, and generate less waste. Our commitment also extends to introducing sustainable products and practices.
Products and facilities
United is implementing a continuous improvement review process to enhance the products we use onboard our aircraft, from both a sustainability perspective as well as a weight-reduction and fuel-efficiency perspective. This year, we are replacing our polystyrene cups with recyclable eco-friendly hot beverage cups made from up to 50 percent recycled plastic water bottles.
We’re also investing in energy-efficient facilities around the world. Our corporate headquarters in downtown Chicago achieved Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification, and we’re installing sustainable design elements like energy-efficient lighting and mechanical systems in several of our facilities, including United Club locations and airport terminals.
Recycling and responsibly managing waste
Part of our commitment to the environment includes responsibly managing and reducing our waste. We are constantly working to identify opportunities to reduce waste and to increase recycling throughout our operations.
Over the past six years, we recycled 23.5 million pounds of aluminum cans, paper and plastic from waste generated on board aircraft and in our facilities.
