At United, we're committed to operating sustainably and responsibly. Part of this pledge means that we minimize the environmental impacts associated with our operations, and that we continuously look for ways to reduce our environmental footprint in the air, on the ground and at our facilities – while continuing to serve our customers.

In 2013, we were recognized for our environmental accomplishments and named Air Transport World magazine’s Eco-Aviation “Airline of the Year” Gold Winner. And we’ve built a corporate track record that we can be proud of, having improved aircraft fuel efficiency by 33% since 1994. We don't want to stop there, though, as we realize there's more to do.

Our four-pillar commitment to the environment

We believe in taking actions today that shape an environmentally sustainable future. Our commitment to the environment rests on four pillars:

Fuel efficiency and carbon management

We’re committed to reducing fuel use and improving the fuel efficiency of our aircraft and vehicles through technology and process innovation.

Alternative fuels

We are leading the airline industry in advancing and investing in environmentally responsible and cost-efficient alternative fuels.

Sustainable products and waste management

We are constantly working to improve the sustainability of our products and our facilities, as well as reducing and responsibly managing waste generated by our business activities.

Partners in sustainability

We continue to partner within United and with our stakeholders—customers, airport employees, business partners, suppliers, governments and non-governmental organizations—to promote accountability and protect the environment as part of our way of doing business.
