Mileage Plus Goes Beyond Miles with Enhanced Mileage Plus Visa Card Redemption Options

CHICAGO and Wilmington, Del.- May 1, 2006 –United and Chase introduced United's Mileage Plus® Choices, which reinvents travel loyalty programs by going beyond miles.  Only Mileage Plus Visaâ cardmembers will now earn Choices -- a new form of currency from United with enhanced redemption opportunities earned automatically with every purchase made with  the Mileage Plus Visa card.

Members can use Choices for five new awards, including:

  • any open seat on any available United, United Express® or TedSM flight booked on united.com with no capacity restrictions or blackout dates
  • any hotel stay booked on united.com - no blackout dates
  • any car rental booked on united.com - no blackout dates
  • Economy Plus AccessSM which offers access up to five inches of additional legroom with Economy Plus® seating
  • Elite Qualifying Miles/Segments that count toward elite status

Or members can use Choices for traditional awards like Standard and Saver awards or upgrades.

"With our introduction of Choices, Mileage Plus has elevated our customers' award options to a new, extraordinary level," said Kenneth Feldman, United's vice president of Loyalty and e-commerce.  "As we celebrate the 25th anniversary of Mileage Plus this week, we are reinventing customer loyalty.  We're offering five new groundbreaking award options, providing members the best array of redemption choices in the airline industry."

This Mileage Plus program enhancement is already being heralded by the frequent flyer community.

“United’s new Choices are the most significant innovation in frequent flyer benefits I've seen since 1988,” said Randy Petersen, editor and publisher of Inside Flyer magazine.  “This impressive array of redemption options brings a new level of transparency and value to today’s frequent flyer.”

“We are thrilled to partner with United to introduce Mileage Plus Choices, a groundbreaking enhancement in customer loyalty that can only be earned by using a United Mileage Plus Visa Card,” said Joe Venuti, senior vice president, Chase Card Services.  “Through Choices, cardmembers have more flexibility than ever when redeeming under the Mileage Plus program.”

In addition to traditional award seats and upgrades-- customers can redeem their Choices for new, innovative awards, including:

Choices for Air Travel:

Cardmembers can simply purchase their ticket on united.com with their Mileage Plus Visa card and then redeem Choices at united.com/chase for a credit that will be applied to their Mileage Plus Visa statement.

Unlike Saver or Standard Awards that have set redemption amounts, the amount of Choices cardmembers redeem is based on the price of the ticket.  For example, cardmembers can purchase a $129 ticket from united.com using their Mileage Plus Visa card and redeem 12,900 Choices for a $129 Visa statement credit.  Cardmembers can also redeem Choices for less than the full amount of the ticket with a minimum of 10,000 Choices.

Choices for Hotel Stays and Car Rentals:

With Choices, cardmembers now have the ability to redeem awards for any hotel stay or car rental booked on united.com with no black-out dates.  For example, cardmembers can book a hotel stay at united.com/hotels for $120, pay for their stay with their Mileage Plus Visa card and redeem 15,000 Choices for a $120 Visa statement credit.  Cardmembers can also book a car rental from united.com/cars for $60, pay for their car rental with their Mileage Plus Visa card and redeem 7,500 Choices for a $60 Visa statement credit.

Choices for An Improved Travel Experience:

By redeeming 40,000 Choices for an annual subscription to Economy Plus AccessSM, cardmembers can enjoy access to United’s Economy Plus section, which includes seating with up to five inches of additional legroom.  Cardmembers can also redeem Choices toward elite status, up to 5,000 Elite Qualifying Miles (EQM) and five Elite Qualifying Segments (EQS) per year.  For example, 10,000 Choices can be redeemed for 1,000 EQMs and one EQS, or 50,000 Choices can be redeemed for 5,000 EQMs and five EQSs.

Even More Ways to Redeem:

In addition to Choices, cardmembers can now use redeemable miles to receive a credit for their Mileage Plus Visa annual fee.  Cardmembers can also use their miles to redeem products from the Mileage Plus online rewards catalog at united.com/merchandise.  Members can shop for golf equipment, business accessories, home essentials and more, including select merchandise from top brands like Callaway, Hartmann, Canon, Toshiba and Movado.
