United and Ted Fly Away with Three EFFIE Awards

United is only airline to win gold awards at U.S. advertising and marketing effectiveness competition

Chicago, June 13, 2005ýý United Airlines received two gold EFFIE Awards this week, and one silver award -- demonstrating that its marketing and advertising campaigns are the airline industry's most effective at delivering business results.

ýThese awards show that United's success in building emotional, brand-based connections with our customers is unmatched by any other airline and other major, well-known brands," said Dennis Cary, Unitedýs senior vice president of Marketing.ý ýEffective advertising that drives results is critical to helping United become a competitive, sustainable company.ý These awards, granted by marketing experts, validate that United understands customers best, as we are the only airline that won a gold EFFIE award this year.ý

Presented annually by the New York American Marketing Association, the EFFIE Awards program is the only national competition that judges advertising and marketing results.ý The awards United received include:

  • Gold Award for United in Transportation:ý Unitedýs animated and illustrated brand campaign celebrates the spirit of the frequent business traveler and creates an emotional connection between the airline and its most valuable customers.
  • Gold Award for Ted in Integrated Marketing Communications:ý The Ted launch incorporated guerilla, paid media, interactive and public relations tactics.ý The Denver campaign garnered more than 175 million media impressions, both locally and nationally.
  • Silver Award for Ted in New Product or Service Introductions:ý A multi-media/guerilla teaser campaign was used to create buzz in Denver prior to the launch of Ted.

The award-winning campaigns were created by Fallon in Minneapolis.ý More than 150 senior advertising and marketing executives reviewed detailed campaign case studies.ý EFFIE scores are based two-thirds on results achieved and one-third on creativity.
