United's New Low-fare Service Celebrates Inaugural Flight to Ft. Lauderdale
CHICAGO, April 7, 2004 - Ted, United's new low-fare service, took off for the first time today from Washington-Dulles to Ft. Lauderdale, a new route not currently served by United. By mid May, Ted will roll out flights to Orlando, Tampa and Las Vegas. Unsuspecting passengers booked on the first flight were greeted Ted-style, with a gate celebration that featured a special, live performance by the Pat McGee Band and an official ribbon-cutting ceremony.
With three roundtrips per day to start, Ted service will quickly expand to 15 roundtrips per day from Dulles by mid May, representing 22 percent of United’s domestic mainline flying from Washington-Dulles.
"We are thrilled to have begun our Ted service to and from Washington-Dulles," said Sean Donohue, vice president, Ted. "The addition of this new hub provides us with the opportunity to bring the affordable and enjoyable Ted flight experience to the Washington D.C. market."
In fact, Ted has been extremely well-received by customers in its first two months of flying, filling 82 percent of seats for February and 89 percent for March. Ted service is also expanding rapidly, with new routes from Chicago-O'Hare starting on May 24.
In addition to the routes served out of Washington-Dulles, Ted offers service from Denver to Orlando, Tampa, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Reno, New Orleans, Ft. Lauderdale and Ontario, Cal.; between San Francisco and Las Vegas; between Los Angeles (LAX) and Las Vegas; and between San Francisco and Phoenix. Beginning May 24, Ted will offer service from Chicago-O'Hare to Orlando with flights eventually rolling out to Tampa, Ft. Lauderdale, Las Vegas and Phoenix.
The relaxed and friendly Ted experience combines low fares with outstanding service. In addition to more simplified, low fares, Ted offers pre-assigned seats and exclusive onboard entertainment, dubbed "Tedevision" and "Tedtunes." Tedevision features a variety of programming in keeping with Ted's relaxed personality, including hit television shows such as Friends and My Wife and Kids; music videos from chart toppers Jason Mraz, Coldplay and Liz Phair; and segments from Jay Leno, Conan O’Brien and the Carson Daly show. Tedtunes features 15 channels of music ranging from Latin, dance, club and easy listening to kids' tunes. Offering something for everyone, featured artists include Sarah McLachlan, Seal, Martina McBride and Outkast.
In addition to complimentary beverage service, Ted's favorite premium
beverages -- Foster’s Lager and margaritas -- and food items are available for purchase on board. Ted customers on flights over two and a half hours can enjoy food a-la-carte style from Bennigan’s On the Go, offering a range of items including Salmon Caesar Salad, the County Cork Club sandwich and Atkins Advantage bars for the carb conscious.
The Ted fleet features the popular Airbus A320, each with 156 seats, featuring a 66-seat Economy Plus section with four extra inches of legroom. All Ted passengers can earn Mileage Plus miles for their Ted flights and will have access to United’s suite of Easy products including EasyCheck-In and EasyUpdate.
