One-Way Award rules

1. Award types:
  • One-Way Saver Awards allow you to fly one way for fewer miles than you could using One-Way Standard Awards. You need half the number of miles you would for the equivalent roundtrip Saver Award. See the One-Way Saver Awards chart for miles required by region.

  • One-Way Standard Awards require more miles than One-Way Saver Awards but give you the flexibility to travel any time seats are available. 2. Flight availability:
  • Awards can be used only for travel on United- and United Express-operated flights.

  • There are no blackout periods for any of our award tickets. However, for One-Way Saver Awards, capacity control restrictions do apply.

3. Booking your award ticket:
  • You can book One-Way Awards on mileageplus.com or united.com (U.S. site only).

  • You can also book these awards by calling United Reservations at 1-800-United-1 (1-800-864-8331).

  • There is no discount for children or infants.

  • The name on your award ticket must match the name on your government-issued photo ID.
4. What you can do with this award ticket:
  • Book a ticket for someone else: You can obtain an award ticket for anyone you choose, even if they’re not traveling with you.

  • Fly standby:: Once you are ticketed, you are allowed to fly standby on earlier or later flights departing on your original date of travel, but the origin and destination airports must be the same as those on your original itinerary. Standby is only permitted for United- or United Express-operated flights and for trips that begin and end in the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico or St. Thomas. If you choose to fly standby, you may need to pay a nominal fee. See details about same-day travel changes.

  • Request a same-day confirmed flight change with a different origin, destination or routing: You can request a confirmed United Economy® seat on another United- or United Express-operated flight for a wholly domestic itinerary that is departing on your original date of travel and is departing at least three hours after the time of the request. If seats are available on the flight you’ve requested, we will confirm your seat and change your itinerary for a nominal fee.

  • Request a same-day confirmed flight change with the same origin, destination and routing: You can request a confirmed United Economy seat on another United- or United Express-operated flight for a wholly domestic itinerary that is departing on your original date of travel and is departing at least three hours after the time of the request. If seats are available on the flight you’ve requested, we will confirm your seat and change your itinerary. You will not be charged a fee. However, a service charge and/or change fee may be charged for other types of changes. See details about same-day travel changes.

5. What you can’t do with this award ticket:
  • Fly codeshare flights: You won’t be able to fly codeshare flights operated by our airline partners.

  • Book within two hours of departure: You won’t be able to book an award ticket for a flight that is departing within two hours.

  • Change passenger name: No name changes are permitted once the award has been ticketed.

  • Request an upgrade: You will not be able to request an upgrade on this or any other type of award ticket.

  • Fly an indirect route: You won’t be able to use this award ticket to fly an indirect route. You must fly between origin and destination via the most direct route flown by United®. Valid routes are described in the United awards charts and award destination guide.
    • You will be allowed to make connections, but not stopovers.
    • You will not be allowed take an indirect or "backhaul" route to get from origin to destination.
  • Accrue Miles: You won't be able to accrue miles on a One-Way Award ticket.

6. Re-routing during delays or cancellation:
  • If your flight becomes delayed or canceled, we will automatically work to re-route you to get you to your destination. If you miss your connection because of a delayed flight, or if your flight is canceled, visit an EasyCheck-in® kiosk, go to united.com or speak to an airport representative to obtain a boarding pass for your revised itinerary.

7. How long your award ticket is valid:
  • You will have to complete all travel within one year from the date the award ticket was originally issued.

8. Changes, refunds and fees:
  • You will be able to make changes to your award ticket by calling United Reservations at 1-800-United-1 (1-800-864-8331). As long as you keep your origin, destination and routing the same, you will not be charged a fee. However, a service charge and/or change fee may be charged for all other types of changes.

  • If you haven’t flown on any portion of your award ticket and want to change the origin or destination whether before or after your original dates of travel, the ticket will need to be refunded and the miles re-credited to the Mileage Plus account. You may have to pay a service charge of $150. Your new one-way award travel needs to be booked on united.com.

  • If you haven’t flown on any portion of your award ticket and want to cancel your travel before your original departure date, contact United Reservations at 1-800-United-1 (1-800-864-8331). If it is past your original travel date, please visit united.com/refunds to request your refund. You may have to pay a service charge of $150.

  • You can request a refund for any taxes paid up to one year from the date the ticket was originally issued, and your miles can be refunded up to two years from the date the ticket was originally issued. You may have to pay a service charge of $150.

  • You will be responsible for any applicable departure and arrival taxes, federal inspection fees, Passenger Facility Charges and other fees, charges and taxes.
