Effective January 12, 2010, we are reducing the miles required for many United Mileage Upgrade Awards and will be allowing upgrades from all United Business® fares and most United Economy® fares. A co-pay will be collected when upgrading using miles from select booking classes. United Mileage Upgrade Awards requested prior to the effective date for travel after the effective date will not be affected and will be subject to the current upgrade policy. Co-pays will not apply to all other types of upgrades.
Frequently Asked Questions
The number of miles required and the corresponding co-pay amount will depend on the origin and destination cities, as well as the type of ticket purchased. If you purchase a higher booking class and request an upgrade using miles, the co-pay may be lower or may not apply.
Updated June 11, 2009
Over the past several months our valued members have provided us feedback about the introduction of a co-pay for United Mileage Upgrade Awards. We took those views into consideration and have adjusted our policy to give our members greater flexibility:
Tickets in B class (United Economy) will not require a co-pay if upgraded with miles.
Tickets in Z class (discounted United Business) will be eligible to be upgraded with miles and a co-pay, effective January 12, 2010.
