Choosing your seats

How do I book a business or first class ticket?

From the home page, under Power search options, select your preferred class of service from the dropdown menu. You may search all fare categories:

  • Economy (lowest)
  • Economy (refundable)
  • Business (lowest)
  • Business (refundable)
  • First (lowest)
  • First (refundable)

The Search by price option displays all available fare categories in one easy-to-use format.

When can I select my seats?

If you are a Mileage Plus member and have a united.com profile, you may view your seat assignment online by logging in to My Itineraries. Subject to availability, you may select seats:

While purchasing tickets

While purchasing your tickets through united.com, you can view a real-time seat map for flights operated by United, United Express or Ted. To view a seat map while reviewing your flight options, select View seat map on the Flights search > Select page.  After you have selected the flights for your itinerary on the Flights search > Select > Review page, click Select seats and enter the remaining passenger information.

After purchasing tickets

To view seats after you’ve purchased tickets, log in to My Itineraries using your Mileage Plus number, and select View/modify for the itinerary you wish to change. Click Seat assignment to change your existing seat assignment. Click the seat you prefer, then click Next flight or Close seat map. Your new seat assignment will be saved.

At check-in

You may also select your seats through EasyCheck-in Online. EasyCheck-in Online is available within 24 hours of your flight. If you forgot to select your seat when purchasing tickets through another website or travel agency, please contact your booking source directly to have them add your Mileage Plus number to your reservation; you will then be able to use My Itineraries to view your seat assignments or make changes if seats are available.

Can I select seats in exit rows or Economy Plus?

To select seats in exit rows or Economy Plus, you must be logged in with your Mileage Plus number and united.com password, and your Mileage Plus number must be included in your itinerary.

Exit Rows seating

  • You must be a 1K or a Premier Executive in order to be pre-assigned or request an exit row.
  • You must be in the same reservation with a 1K to be pre-assigned or request an exit row.

Economy Plus seating

Economy Plus is available on a first come, first served basis to our best customers, including:

  • Global Services
  • 1K
  • Premier Executive
  • Premier 

If it is available on your flight, you may also be offered the option to purchase Economy Plus seating when you check in. Or, you may wish to purchase Economy Plus Access.

Seats are assigned to eligible customers in the order in which they book their travel. If you have a ticket and would like to assign yourself a seat in Economy Plus, log in to My Itineraries using your Mileage Plus number and select View/modify for the itinerary you wish to change. Click Seat assignment to change your existing seat assignment.  Economy Plus seats are indicated by light blue shading, shown below. Click the seat you prefer, then click Next flight or Close seat map. Your new seat assignment will be saved.

Can I choose seat assignments for award tickets?

From the Flights search > Select > Review page, click Select Seats to see which seats are available on your selected flight. You may select seats from the Review, Purchase or My Itinerary pages.

Choose any Available seat before submitting your purchase.  Because this is a real-time seat map, another customer could occasionally select the same seat during the seat selection process.

To view a seat map and change seats after you have purchased your tickets, you may log in to My Itineraries, and select View/modify for the itinerary you wish to change.

After you have successfully selected your seats, a red confirmation message will be displayed on your itinerary.

How do I book a seat for an infant?

There are two options when traveling with an infant (children under 2 years of age) within the United States, Canada, San Juan and U.S. Virgin Islands:

  1. Lap Child: Infants are not required to occupy a seat. However, the reservation for the traveling adult must be documented as having an infant in seat. If you decide to fly with an infant in lap, book your reservation on united.com and then contact United Reservations at 1-800-UNITED-1 (1-800-864-8331) to advise that an infant will be traveling on your itinerary.
  2. Child in seat: You may purchase a seat for an infant at the applicable adult fare. If you decide to purchase a separate seat for your infant, please contact United Reservations at 1-800-UNITED-1 (1-800-864-8331).

New booking options
Can I move between searches by price, schedule and flexible dates?

Yes. To move between different displays of your search results, select the tab you want next to "view results by" at the top of the Flights Search page. You can switch between displays without re-entering the search information for your flights.

For example:

  • Search by price shows you results from the lowest price to the highest price. It also allows you to see the prices for tickets that match your itinerary from Economy (lowest) through First (refundable).

  • Search by schedule shows you a list of available flights displayed by flight time. The price for the itinerary you searched is shown near the top of the page, as is the lowest price found for your itinerary.

  • Search by flexible dates displays a matrix of prices and dates, so that you can comparison shop for lower price options, depending upon the dates you'd like to travel. The display lets you search at a glance two days of flight options before and after your proposed travel dates.

You can click on the itinerary in the matrix that best suits your needs:

You may also sort the results of your flexible dates search by price, number of stops, departure time, arrival time, departure airport, arrival airport or total travel time.

What search options are available to me under Power search options?

You can choose the class of service you prefer, from Economy (lowest) through First (refundable); select the kind of upgrade you'd like to request; choose number of stops; input a promotion or discount code; and include Star Alliance flights in your search results.

How do I search for a ticket when I have a discount I'd like to apply?

Type your promotion code or e-certificate number next to My promotion code in the Power search section as you are providing information regarding your flight search.

How do I search for age-qualified fares (e.g., senior fares)?

Select the number of passengers of each type (e.g., adult, senior or child) from the dropdown menu in the Passenger section. When the site returns your fare quote, the results for your search will indicate the type of discount you are receiving, if one is available. Accept the terms and conditions, and remember to bring with you proof of qualification for the discount when you go the airport.

Can I combine discount fare shopping with upgrade eligibility searches?

Yes, you can combine upgrade searches with discounts and bonus mile promotions with discounts.

To do a combined search for upgrades on flights that are also discount- or promotion-eligible, choose the upgrade you'd like to request in the box next to, I would like to use this upgrade, and input the e-certificate or promotion code next to, My promotion code is, then click Search.

The results will indicate whether flights are promotion-eligible, upgrade-eligible or both. After you have purchased an upgrade-eligible ticket, you must proceed to request the upgrade(s).

Are all available fares displayed?

When you search by price, you see a matrix of available fares. This display is followed by a listing of available itineraries.

Can I book my ticket in languages other than English?

When it is fully launched, the new booking engine will allow you to book your tickets in English, Japanese (in Japan), German (in Germany) or Portuguese (in Brazil).

How do I book Award travel?

From united.com, click on the Book Award travel link and log in with your Mileage Plus number and password. Input your desired travel dates, times, number of passengers and service class and select Search.

How do I make a reservation for travel to more than one city?

If your travel will include multiple destinations and/or stopovers, select the radio button on the "Multi-city" tab from the Flights Search page. Note that the one-way and multi-city search options are not available when “Search by flexible dates” is selected.  Select “Search by price” or “Search by schedule” to shop for one-way or multi-city itineraries.

You may include up to seven origin-and-destination pairs in your search.

How do I modify my search during the booking process?

If you wish to revise your search criteria, look for the "Edit your Search" feature on the left-hand side of the Flights Search > Select page. You may change the departing airport, destination airport, dates and times. If you need to edit additional search criteria, you may click on the 'back' button or click "Flights Search" to start over.

Is there an option to search for alternate airports when looking for flights to purchase?

On the "Create itinerary: Shop for flights" page, click the check box "Search alternate airports." This option checks for lower fares that may be available at neighboring U.S. airports.

How do I book a flight using an electronic certificate?

From the "Flights Search" page, enter information in the From, To, Departing, Returning and Passenger fields and choose your search by price, schedule or flexible dates. In the "My promotion code is" box, enter the electronic certificate number or promotion code, with no spaces, and then click Search.

If there are flights available that meet the criteria of the promotion, you will see a star that indicates they are promotion-eligible.


If there are no flights available that meet the criteria of the promotion, you will see a message stating, "You have entered a valid promotion, but there are no eligible flights available. Please try selecting other dates."

How can I view the fare rules?

During the booking process, click "View price breakdown" and View fare rules on the Flights Search > Select page. In creating your itinerary, two or more fares may have been combined to price the flights you have chosen. When reading the fare rules, remember that the most restrictive of the fare rules will apply to the entire itinerary.

New features for Mileage Plus members


What is a trip template and how do I build one?

The trip template feature allows you to save city-pair flight searches and come back to book them at a later date. The trip template will store your city pairs, preferred flights/times of travel, preferred car and hotel partner and usual length of stay. You can retrieve your template from My trip templates.

To save a new template, click Save this itinerary as a trip template from the Review page, just before you click Continue to purchase. You may also click Create new template from My trip templates.

How can I view my reservations?

Click on My Itineraries from the Fare finder box on the homepage to access your reservation. You will need to log in with your Mileage Plus number and united.com password. Your reservation must have your Mileage Plus number on it and be on a United, Ted, United Express or code share flight operated by United.

If you have forgotten your Mileage Plus number or your password, you can retrieve them online.

How long am I able to retrieve an E-receipt from My Itineraries?

If your Mileage Plus number was included in your reservations, you may access E-receipts for those e-ticketed trips for six months after the last day of travel. Visit My Itineraries and click View past trips.

How long will cancelled reservations appear in My Itineraries?

A cancelled reservation will appear in Current itineraries for 24 hours after the last flight on your itinerary. After that, it will be available to you in My Itineraries by clicking View past trips.

How can I obtain a receipt/copy of my ticket charges?

If you are a Mileage Plus member and a registered user of united.com, you can view and print copies of your e-ticket receipts from the past six months, provided the Mileage Plus number is in the reservation.

There is a $20.00 fee for requesting receipts not available through the web site.  Receipts or duplicate records can be obtained by Email: Refund Requests and Status to the refund department, calling 1-888-551-6881, or sending a written request with your check for $20 for processing made payable to:

The following information is needed to process your ticket copy request:

  • your name
  • full mailing address
  • phone number
  • 13-digit ticket number (beginning with 016)
  • flight number
  • date of travel
Note:  If you purchased your ticket through a travel agency, you may request a copy by contacting them directly.

How can I request an upgrade online?

There are multiple ways to request an upgrade online.

What information can I find in my Mileage Plus Summary?

My Mileage Plus, which you can sign up to receive, is a monthly email with information about your Mileage Plus account; in addition, you can view your Mileage Plus Summary, which includes:

  • Account summary – details your most recent Mileage Plus activity
  • View account activity details – set the date ranges or view your current program balance and account activity for the entire previous calendar year
  • Program participation summary – view your flight, hotel, car, Visa, dining, grocery miles, mall and other program participation

Where can I see a list of all current promotions?

To view all current active promotions that are available to all members we recommend that you view the Mileage Plus promotions page.

In addition, you can log in to the Mileage Plus Summary to view your personal Program participation survey to see miles you’re earning through flight activity, hotel and rental car partners, Mileage Plus Visa, Mileage Plus Dining, Mileage Plus Grocery Miles and Mileage Plus Mall.

Flight information

Can I send someone else the itinerary for my flight?

When booking a flight on united.com, you will see a Share this itinerary section on the Flights Search > Select > Review page. You may send the itinerary to up to four e-mail addresses.

How can I learn the number of miles I'll earn for a particular flight?

From the Flights Search page, select departure and arrival cities and dates, then click Search. When the Flights Search > Select page displays, click or just scroll over Show flight details.

If you already have a reservation, you can view the number of Award miles you’ll receive on your e-receipt or in My Itineraries.

How can I find out which aircraft will be used on my flight?

From united.com, click on the Flight status tab, select your airline and input the flight number. Look for the aircraft type next to the departure and arrival times.

For which airlines can I obtain flight status information?

You can obtain flight status information Adria, Air Canada, Air New Zealand, All Nippon Airways, Asiana, Austrian, British West Indies Airways, bmi (british midland), Croatia Airlines, LOT Polish Airlines, Lufthansa, Scandinavian Airlines, Singapore Airlines, South African Airways, Spanair, Swiss, Tap Portugal, Thai Airways, US Airways and United.

Holding a reservation

How do I hold a reservation?

Log in and create a travel itinerary.

If the fare you are purchasing meets the requirements to be held, you may hold the reservation until midnight the following day, as long as the travel date is at least 48 hours from time of booking. Note: You must be logged in with your Mileage Plus number to see the Hold option.

E-Fares, Award Travel, and some discounted tickets do not qualify for Book and hold; they must be ticketed immediately. A held ticket guarantees availability but does not guarantee the fare. To guarantee the fare, we recommend purchasing the ticket at the time of booking.

On the Flights Search > Select > Review page, enter your passenger information and at the bottom of the page, click Hold itinerary. Please note that if you use an e-certificate, promotion code, or upgrades, you do not have the option to hold a reservation. You can only hold up to 9 reservations at a time.

Next, you will see a screen that notifies you of the time and date until which your reservation will be held. Please note: You have not yet held the reservation. There are instructions to scroll to the bottom of the page.

You must click the check box that says, "I understand that fares are not guaranteed until the ticket is purchased and I must return to My Itineraries to complete the purchase." When you check the box, a Hold reservation button will appear.  Click Hold reservation.

You will receive a confirmation number and a message notifying you that to complete the transaction, you must return to the site to purchase your reservation.

How do I retrieve and purchase a held reservation?

Log in to My Itineraries and click the Book link under Held itineraries.

After you select Book, you will see a screen that shows three buttons – Book, Delete and Print Itinerary, as well as a fourth button at the end of your itinerary that says Change.

You may select Book to complete the purchase process.
