We are focused on implementing effective green initiatives in our facilities.
- Waste management and recycling
We're doing more to minimize waste, promote recycling and employ green design principles. For our fixed facilities, we hosted a waste management summit and published guidelines to promote and enhance recycling, incineration and the use of other responsible disposal methods. We have disposed of more than 10,000 tons of waste while repurposing other materials to divert waste from landfills.
- Green design/LEED certification
As we evaluate and plan our facilities, we look for ways to incorporate green principles into their designs in a cost-effective manner. We have applied elements such as automated lighting and energy-efficient mechanical systems to certain facilities, and the initial build-out of our corporate headquarters in downtown Chicago achieved Silver LEED certification.
- Supply chain
We are beginning to incorporate environmental questions and factors when we evaluate non-fuel sourcing procurements to understand and evaluate the environmental initiatives and goals of our vendors and to encourage environmental practices important to us. Our sourcing organization works closely with the maintenance team and has identified cleaning chemicals that carry the Design for the Environment label established by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for certain cabin cleaning applications.
