Available exclusively for members who earn more than 100,000 EQM or 120 EQS, Systemwide Upgrades are the only earned upgrade that offers you the comfort of premium travel on United® and United Express® flights worldwide.Experience our new first and business class cabins and arrive relaxed and refreshed—on many international flights, you can even stretch out in 180–degree lie–flat seats. Plus, if seats are available, these upgrades can be confirmed as early as the time you request them. Now that’s peace of mind.
 
Who can get them
Elite members who earn 100,000 EQM or 120 EQS in a calendar year.
The facts
 Systemwide Upgrades can be used for a one-way upgrade to the next class of service (for example, economy to business) on eligible flights on United or United Express worldwide (see eligibility).
This upgrade can be used on flights operated and marketed by United or United Express. It may also be used on Lufthansa on a limited basis.
If your upgrade request is confirmed, you will receive a one-cabin upgrade.
Upgrades are good for one–way travel; to upgrade a roundtrip ticket, you’ll need to use two upgrades.
How to get them
If you earn 1K status in 2010, you will get six Systemwide Upgrades on Jan. 1, 2011 - after you reach or requalify for 1K status. The opportunity to earn more is based on the number of miles you fly.
If you earn 1K status in 2011, you will get six Systemwide Upgrades as soon as you reach the 100,000
elite status miles (EQM)
or 120
elite status segments (EQS)
threshold - rather than on Jan 1 of the next year.
No matter when you earn your 1K status, you will have the potential to earn more Systemwide Upgrades based on the number of miles you fly:
Earn two more upgrades for every additional 50,000 (EQM) or 60 (EQS) between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31.
There is no limit to how many you can earn in a calendar year.
Upgrades are added to your upgrade balance within 7-10 days and are good for one year from the month they were issued.
How to use them
Systemwide Upgrades are the only complimentary upgrade that offer you the comfort of premium travel to any United® or United Express® destination worldwide.
Buy an eligible ticket on United, United Express or Lufthansa.
For United or United Express flights, request an upgrade when you book your flight, or anytime up to two hours prior to departure.
You can also sponsor an upgrade—that is, upgrade another person even if you are not traveling together.
For Lufthansa flights, a paper upgrade certificate must be presented upon check-in on the day of departure. Call MileagePlus customer service at least 14 days prior to your travel at 1–800–421–4655 to order this certificate, and it will be mailed to you.

If upgrade seats are available, we will confirm you at the time of request; if not, you’ll be put on a wait list.
The upgrade wait list is prioritized based on MileagePlus status, booking code and time of purchase.
