Regional Upgrades

New!You can now use these upgrades on most Continental flights. > Learn more

With Regional Upgrades, elite members can experience our premium cabins on United® and United Express® on flights in the continental U.S. and beyond, including top destinations like Hawaii. As an extra benefit for frequent business travelers, this upgrade is also available on our p.s.® service from New York to Los Angeles and San Francisco.
Get two Regional Upgrades when you reach 75,000 EQM or 90 EQS. Once you’ve earned the upgrades you can request a premium seat for yourself or for friends or family members – even if you’re not traveling together. Plus, if seats are available, these upgrades can be confirmed as early as the time you request them. Now that's flexibility.

Who can get them

Elite members who earn 75,000 EQM or 90 EQS will receive two Regional Upgrades and the opportunity to earn an unlimited number of upgrades in the same calendar year.

The facts

Regional Upgrades can be used for a one–way upgrade to the next class of service (for example, economy to business) on United and United Express flights in the continental U.S., Hawaii, Canada, Caribbean, Central America and Mexico (see eligibility).

This upgrade can be used only on flights operated and marketed by United or United Express.

If your upgrade request is confirmed, you will receive a one-cabin upgrade.

Upgrades are good for one–way travel; to upgrade a roundtrip ticket, you’ll need to use two upgrades.

How to earn them

Any elite member who earns 75,000 EQM or 90 EQS will get two Regional Upgrades. You can earn two more for every 25,000 EQM/30 EQS earned after that in the same calendar year - with no limit to how many can be earned. For 2011 1K members (earned as of January 1), these upgrades are in addition to the two you'll earn for each quarter in which you fly at least 10,000 paid, qualifying miles on United or United Express.

Once you earn them, upgrades are added to your upgrade balance within four weeks. Upgrades are good for one year from the month they were issued.

How to use them

Buy an eligible ticket on United or United Express. Booking code Z and award tickets are not eligible for this upgrade.

You can request an upgrade during the booking or any time up to two hours prior to departure.

You can also sponsor an upgrade —that is, request to upgrade another person even if you are not traveling together.

If upgrade seats are available, we will confirm you at the time of request; if not, you’ll be put on a wait list.

Based on your elite status, you may be given priority over other members for the first available upgrade seat. The wait list is prioritized based on MileagePlus status, booking code and time of purchase.

To see if your upgrade is confirmed, check My Reservations on united.com or the monitors at your departure gate. Sign up for EasyUpdate® and we’ll also notify you via phone, email or text message.
