Flight Attendant selection process overview
Selection process overview
Thank you for your interest in the flight attendant position. We are excited that you are considering this position. Here is some information about the selection process that you may find helpful in preparing you for what to expect.
Step 1 - Online questionnaire/Telephone screen
All candidates interested in being considered complete an online questionnaire which is available via the Apply online link below. Candidates deemed most competitive based upon responses to the questions posed are contacted to participate in a phone screen with Spherion (SFN), United's recruitment partner. Candidates will be contacted directly by a telephone interview specialist.
Step 2 - Spherion interview downtown Chicago
Successful candidates in step 1 are invited to meet with Spherion at their downtown Chicago office for a one-on-one interview. During this interview, candidates meet with a SFN recruiter who will review the candidate's resume. Additionally, a structured interview takes place. Candidates are also offered the opportunity to self assess to determine if they meet minimum reach and maximum height requirements. Successful candidates from Step 2 are invited to complete an online application which is required prior to proceeding to Step 3.
Step 3 - United operations center interviews
Flight Attendant candidates attend an interview at United's Operations Center in Elk Grove Village, Illinois (about 20 minutes from O'Hare). Candidates start their visit by receiving a detailed overview of the flight attendant position. Following the overview, candidates participate in a group activity in which the team is given an exercise to discuss and complete. After the group exercise, candidates meet with a United recruiter who conducts a one-on-one structured interview.
Step 4 - Welcome to the training center
Candidates successful in all the above steps are extended a conditional offer to attend flight attendant training. Offers to attend our tuition-free training program are conditional based upon successful completion of all pre-employment requirements.
Step 5 - Report to your domicile
Those who successfully complete our 6 ½ week training program are extended an offer to become a United flight attendant. A $1500 incentive payment is given to candidates between Phase I and Phase II of training. Following a graduation ceremony, you will then become a United employee and complete a brief sign-on process.
