Every year, the foundation receives thousands of requests for support. While we would like to be able to assist every worthy charitable organization and activity, the volume of requests far outweighs our ability and resources to be responsive to each one.
Specific guidelines
The following is an example of the information that is typically required in a proposal. Proposals generally consist of three sections:

Executive summary |
 |
The executive summary must be kept to one page and should include the following information:
- Date/duration of project
- Location of activity
- Target beneficiaries
- Number of people who would benefit from grant
In addition, it should also include:
- Resources requested
- Financial
- Air transportation
- Human (i.e., volunteer)
- Intended use of funds, tickets and/or volunteers
- Benefits to the community at large and the United community specifically
- Description of how the project fits within United's planned giving charitable focus
- Description of how United's participation will affect the project's ability to attract other sponsors, contributors, and participants

Organizational history |

The history of your organization should include the information below:
- Organization's mission
- Organization's current goals
- Current & existing programs
- Full description of the goals and objectives of the project
- A description of the plan for evaluation of the completed project

Supporting documents |
 |
Supporting documents may include any information that elaborates on the items summarized in the executive summary.
Supporting documents also include:
- A copy of your organization's IRS tax-exempt letter
- A list of your organization's board of directors with affiliations
- A list of your organization's major contributors and other sponsors with dollar amounts
- A copy of your most recent annual report
- Audited financial statements or Form 990
- A copy of your previous and current year program and organization budget
- A proposal letter with benefits of sponsorship clearly outlined

Limitations on eligibility |

To be eligible for a contribution, an organization must be a recognized 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Other restrictions for organizations may apply.
Examples of organizations that are not eligible:
- Political organizations
- Fraternities & sororities
- Alumni associations
- Athletic teams and leagues and their booster organizations
- International organizations, unless they have a domestic location and are incorporated in the U.S. as a 501(c)(3) organization
- Houses of worship operating under their EIN
- Faith-based organizations that require participants/recipients to be of a certain faith
- Evangelical organizations
- Private schools that discriminate based on faith
- Private schools that are not accredited
- Groups that discriminate or limit membership based on race, gender, beliefs, class or cultural considerations
