Recycling Programs
We have an active, industrial solid-waste recycling program focusing on recycling waste generated by our airport and maintenance operations. We are extending our approach and are evaluating opportunities to recycle waste onboard our aircraft and across all our facilities.

Airport and Maintenance Operations
We review our waste streams to identify opportunities and recognize the need to reduce pollution at the point of generation where feasible without shifting the risk from one environmental medium to another. We have management systems and programs to ensure we are in compliance with waste management regulations, and we continually evaluate and implement waste minimization and recycling projects.

Onboard Recycling
As a first step, we recycle all aluminum and plastic beverage containers from domestic flights that arrive in Hawaii. Next, we will be expanding our program to arrivals at other locations, such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle-Tacoma airports. The expanded program takes into account the complexities associated with the requirements, processes, and opportunities associated with each airport. We look forward to expanding our onboard recycling program.

In Our Facilities
In 2007, we re-invigorated our facility-wide recycling program at our operations center, and in 2008 we set and exceeded our goal to double our previous year’s recycling. We also developed waste minimization guidelines which aim at assessing wastes and making improvements based on best practices. In 2009, we are implementing waste minimization at the remainder of our largest facilities and will establish a waste baseline in order to measure future improvements.

Electronic Recycling
We donate our used computer equipment to “Computers for Schools,” a national not-for-profit organization that refurbishes the equipment for potential re-use in public schools. Computer equipment that is not suitable for re-use is recycled. We estimate that approximately 35,000 desktop and portable computers, 5,000 servers, 40,000 monitors, and hardware accessories will be part of this program that started in 2007 and is expected to be fully implemented in 2012.
