We take very seriously our responsibility to reduce our impact on the environment, and we are committed to taking action on this important issue.

We are taking steps to preserve the environment through responsible management. We have developed programs and initiatives to evaluate and address environmental challenges. As an environmentally responsible company, we continuously work to improve our conservation of fuel and water, improve and expand our recycling programs, and reduce hazardous waste and aircraft noise.

We are in the process of assessing our environmental footprint, focusing on our worldwide fleet operations, ground support operations, and the buildings we occupy. We have established cross-functional committees, including a steering committee – the Environmental Responsibility Council – composed of officers of our corporation, to oversee these activities. We will continue to comply with all applicable international and domestic environmental laws and regulations.

Environmental responsibility governance
Our Environmental Responsibility Council reviews environmental policies and performance to ensure that we are promoting environmental responsibility.

Carbon offset program
We are committed to promoting the protection of our environment, in the air and on the ground. Our carbon offset program enables our customers to offset the carbon footprint associated with their air travel by making tax-deductible charitable contributions to the nonprofit organization Sustainable Travel International (STI) for the purchase of independently reviewed and verified carbon offsets. Our carbon calculator provides customers with an accurate calculation of the carbon footprint specific to their United travel itinerary.

Fuel conservation
We work to preserve the environment through improved fuel efficiency in the air and on the ground. Through operational and fleet improvements, we have achieved jet fuel consumption efficiencies. We have also enhanced our fuel conservation efforts through use of Alternative Fuel Vehicles (AFVs) including electric ground support equipment. We are also collaborating with governments in the countries where we operate to increase fuel efficiency through improved Air Traffic Control, infrastructure and flight paths.

Recycling
From our airport and maintenance operations, to on board our aircraft and in our offices, we recognize the need to reduce pollution at the point of generation.

Environmental partnerships
To aid us in accomplishing the environmental objectives we have set, we have developed strong relationships with governmental bodies, trade associations and well-respected non-government partners such as Conservation International.
