In addition to our efforts to support arts and culture and youth with potential, we have developed a number of partnerships with organizations striving to improve the lives of others.

We have strong, collaborative partnerships with:

American Cancer Society
The American Cancer Society (ACS) is the nationwide community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy and service.

We have teamed up with ACS to aid them in their fight to eliminate cancer through events and programs, such as:
  • The Discovery Ball - We were the largest single sponsor of the 2008 Discovery Ball, which raised more than $2 million for cancer research, education advocacy and service programs. Through our efforts, we helped create a sustainable event that engaged a group of leaders that reflected the diversity in Chicago's business, entertainment, sports and civic communities. Funds raised for the 2008 Discovery Ball will help further the work of the American Cancer Society. View more details on the Discovery Ball.

  • Kenny Hugyou and Maye I. Hugyou - In 2007, we developed the Kenny Hugyou program in partnership with the American Cancer Society and invited individuals across the country to send GUND teddy bears and smiles to kids undergoing cancer treatment through a contribution of cash or Mileage Plus miles. The bears were named "Kenny Hugyou" (can-he-hug-you). The campaign was a tremendous success with over 44 million Mileage Plus miles and $200,000 donated to the American Cancer Society.

In 2008, United again teamed up with the American Cancer Society and introduced Maye I. Hugyou, the adorable blue-eyed sister of Kenny Hugyou. Funds and Mileage Plus miles raised by the teddy bear campaigns will aid the American Cancer Society’s efforts to save lives from cancer by investing in research to discover cancer’s causes and cures, educating and empowering people to avoid the disease or find it early, helping people facing cancer overcome obstacles in their personal cancer fight, and fighting for laws to keep our communities healthy and cancer free.

  • United Chicago Select Golf Invitational - The United Chicago Select Golf Invitational has achieved tremendous success while attracting participation from many of Chicago's leaders in their respective fields. Through our leadership as the title sponsor, this event has helped raise significant funds, making it the most successful golf fundraiser nationwide for the American Cancer Society. Together, we are helping the ACS to fulfill its mission to eliminate cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy, and service. Breast Cancer Network of Strength
Breast Cancer Network of Strength is a nonprofit organization with the mission to ensure, through information, empowerment and peer support, that no one faces breast cancer alone. On Mother's Day 2008, the Walk to Empower attracted thousands of participants across 15 cities nationwide.

The Walk to Empower is the most successful volunteer and grassroots fundraising effort in United’s history. In 2008, United had representation in 13 cities, over 3,000 employee participants nationwide and raised more than $525,000. We serve as both a National Official Sponsor and the Official Airline of the Breast Cancer Network of Strength.

Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation
The foundation strives to create a future of hope for children and families by eradicating pediatric AIDS, providing care and treatment for people with HIV/AIDS, and accelerating the discovery of new treatments for other serious and life-threatening pediatric illnesses. We are delighted to serve as the Official Airline of the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation.
