Visit Boston

No other city in America is so immediately associated with history than Boston. And while the quaint, compact capital of Massachusetts proudly preserves its past, the town has enough contemporary flair and style to entertain even the most modern-thinking visitor.

Boston's historic Freedom Trail offers the best orientation to the city, taking visitors from the Massachusetts State House through pioneer burial grounds to the Old Corner Bookstore once frequented by literary landmarks Hawthorne and Thoreau.  Paul Revere's house, meanwhile, is Boston's last surviving seventeenth-century dwelling, and it was from the adjacent Old North Church that lanterns were hung during Revere's famous 1775 ride to alert townspeople of his progress. Nearby, Fanueil Hall is an historic landmark transformed into a modern shopping and dining complex.

For even more history, the USS Constitution Museum and the Bunker Hill Monument are major draws, as is the Black Heritage Trail, connecting several sites significant to Massachusetts' role as the first state to abolish slavery in 1783, including the African Meeting House, the first African-American church in the U.S.

To get a flair for contemporary Boston, explore the lively district of Back Bay with its Victorian houses and upscale shops clustered around Copely Square.  The North End, meanwhile, is flavored by its Italian American roots, while South Boston remains distinctly Irish American.  Built in 1912, Fenway Park is America's oldest (and arguably its best-loved) ballpark, drawing Red Sox fans in droves each baseball season.  Across the Charles River, Cambridge is home to the picturesque Harvard campus, worth a full day's excursion for its colorful shops, restaurants, and cafés.

No visit to Boston would be complete without a bowl of clam chowder or lobster bisque at one of the many excellent seafood restaurants scattered throughout the city, and you might as well finish off with a nightcap at the original Cheers, where you're sure to find yourself humming the famous theme song to the popular series the pub inspired.
