ID and documentation requirements
International travel including travel to/from Mexico, Canada, Caribbean, Costa Rica, U.S. Virgin Islands and San Juan

The following information and links are good resources to answer many of your international travel-related questions.

New passport requirements

In compliance with the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, beginning January 23, 2007, all passengers traveling by air to or from the United States will be required to hold a valid passport.

This new requirement applies to all passengers, including U.S. citizens, traveling to and from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and the Caribbean.

When planning international travel, please be sure that you are in possession of all required documents for both outbound and return flights.  Remember to allow ample time for acquiring official travel documents.

For complete information on the requirements, please visit travel.state.gov.

Documentation information

Requirements for documentation vary based on the countries you are planning to visit. For travel to the U.S., we recommend that you contact the nearest United States Embassy or Consulate for the most current updates.

In most cases, you will need a valid passport when leaving your country of residence.  Please remember to sign your passport.

Some countries require you to have a visa for entry and may also require proof of onward travel (such as itinerary/receipt), sufficient funds for the length of your stay and/or a confirmation from your hotel.  Also, please note that many countries no longer accept hospital issued birth certificates as acceptable documentation.

For further information, please also consult the individual documentation/visa requirements for the countries of which you are transiting through or visiting by contacting their consulates or embassies.  Also note that minors traveling outside of their country of residence without both parents/guardians may require additional documents.
