Security

Can friends or family accompany me to the gate?
Yes, in some cases. Non-ticketed escorts may accompany minor children traveling alone and passengers needing special assistance to the gate. In addition, family members of military personnel being deployed to combat zones overseas can accompany ticketed customers to the gate.

Each escort must have an unexpired government issued photo i.d. At major airports, where United has special assistance employees in red jackets in the lobby area, the escort can ask these employees for assistance instead of waiting in line at the ticket counter. Non-ticketed escored needs to obtain a security checkpoint gate pass.

Are boarding passes required to go through security?
TSA security directives require each customer to check in before going through the security screening checkpoint at most airports. Eventually this will be a requirement at all airports in the U.S.

What can I expect at the airport if I am checking my baggage?
For your security, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is screening all checked baggage. Unlocked bags can be examined quickly. Locked bags will be opened if necessary, then resealed. That process could result in delay or damage. You can find more information on the TSA website.

Checked baggage must have your name on the outside of the bag. We also recommend that you place your name and address inside your baggage. Valuable items, as well as medications and prescriptions, should be carried personally by you.

Special assistance

What do I do if I require special assistance to get to my gate?
An individual escorting a ticketed passenger who requires special assistance must demonstrate why they need access beyond security checkpoints. Airports may require additional screening procedures, so allow extra time for this purpose. Escorts should check at a United ticket counter when they arrive at the airport to determine the procedure. Each escort must have an unexpired government issued photo i.d. and obtain a security checkpoint gate pass.
