EasyCheck-in Online basics

What is EasyCheck-in Online?
EasyCheck-in Online is a service that allows customers traveling on a United or United Express flight to check in for United flights worldwide.  Also, if your originating flight is on United or United Express, you will be allowed to check in to your connecting flights on most other carriers.

Through this service, you are able to confirm upgrades, select seats and print boarding documents.  By printing your boarding documents through united.com, you can proceed directly to security.  If you have bags to check, you may check in online and then use an EasyCheck-in Kiosk or EasyCheck-in Curbside (for flights within the U.S. only) at the airport.
 
To use EasyCheck-in Online, go to the left side of the united.com homepage and click the EasyCheck-in tab.

When can I use EasyCheck-in Online?
For departures within the United States, including Alaska; Hawaii; San Juan, Puerto Rico; St. Thomas and the U.S. Virgin Islands, EasyCheck-in Online is available 1 hour to 24 hours prior to flight departure. For international flights, EasyCheck-in Online is available from 2 to 24 hours prior to departure.

Accessing EasyCheck-in Online

Who can use EasyCheck-in Online?
You may use EasyCheck-in Online for all United flights worldwide if you:

  • Have an E-ticket for your reservation
  • Are a Mileage Plus member with a united.com password -or-
  • Have the confirmation number and last name of passenger traveling    -or-
  • Have the E-ticket number and last name of passenger traveling    -or-
  • Have the credit card number used to purchase the ticket and the last name of passenger traveling ·
  • For travel within the United States, including Alaska; Hawaii; San Juan, Puerto Rico; and St. Thomas and the Virgin Islands, check in between 1 and 24 hours prior to your scheduled departure
  • For International travel, check in between 2 and 24 hours prior to scheduled departure
  • The first flight in your itinerary must be operated by United or United Express, and connecting flights may be operated by any carrier

Can I use EasyCheck-in Online if I purchased my ticket from a travel agency or online agency?
Yes, customers holding United e-tickets issued by an online or offline travel agency may use EasyCheck-in Online.

You may search for your reservation by your Mileage Plus number, email address, confirmation number, E-ticket number, or credit card number using the dropdown menu.

Can I use EasyCheck-in Online if my itinerary includes travel on other carriers?
If your originating flight is on United or United Express, you may check in to most of your connecting flight segments on other airlines.  During the check-in process, you will be alerted if your itinerary is eligible for check-in on other carriers. 

If your trip originates with another carrier, please check in with that carrier.

Can I use EasyCheck-in Online when I'm traveling on an award ticket?
Yes.  EasyCheck-in Online is available for all award travel that meets online check-in requirements.

Requesting upgrades

Can I use EasyCheck-in Online if I have an upgrade?  What are my options for payment?
Yes, if you have a pre-requested upgrade on a United or United Express flight, you are able to check in online.  You will only be able to use the specific type of upgrade that you selected at the time of booking.

You may also request an upgrade through EasyCheck-in Online.   If you request an electronic upgrade, and your upgrade is confirmed, you will receive your boarding pass for the upgraded cabin; if you are placed on the upgrade waitlist, you will receive a boarding pass for your original cabin and also a departure management card to confirm that you are on the upgrade list.  If your requested upgrade is confirmed at the departure gate, the agent will call you by name to exchange your boarding pass.


In addition to offering the ability to upgrade using Systemwide, Confirmed Regional and 500-Mile Electronic Upgrades, EasyCheck-in Online now allows you to upgrade using miles from your Mileage Plus account during the check-in process.  The miles will automatically be deducted from your account.  If you are using miles for payment and sponsoring other customers for travel, all customers traveling on the itinerary must use miles for payment.

You may also purchase additional 500-Mile Electronic Upgrade kits during the EasyCheck-in process.  These upgrade kits will be stored in your electronic bank for future use.

I was offered the option of purchasing 500-mile electronic upgrade kits, but I don't want to.  Can I continue to check-in online?
From the "EasyCheck-in: Purchase upgrade kits" page, click Cancel on the lower left-hand corner of the screen.

Why do I have to enter my credit card information to purchase upgrade kits using EasyCheck-in Online?
If you have logged in to EasyCheck-in Online with a confirmation number, E-mail address or E-Ticket number, you will need to enter your credit card information.  If you log in using your Mileage Plus account number and password, Easy Check-in will pre-populate the credit card information from your online profile.

After purchasing 500-mile upgrade kits while checking in online, how do I continue with check-in?
To  proceed with check-in, access the dropdown menu and select "500-mile - Electronic" as your upgrade form of payment.

Can I reprint my receipt for purchased upgrades if I have a printer problem while using EasyCheck-in Online?
The reprint function will not reprint a receipt for purchased upgrades.  You may ask a United representative at the airport to reprint the receipt.

I received a message from the EasyCheck-in: Purchase upgrade page saying my credit card could not be verified.  What should I do?
Try logging out of EasyCheck-in and logging in to the E-Upgrades link in the Mileage Plus dropdown menu.  If you can't complete your purchase of the upgrade kits there, you can purchase them at an EasyCheck-in kiosk at the airport.

If I have applied for an upgrade and would like to change the kind of upgrade while checking in online, can I do so?
A reservation that has an already confirmed upgrade (Systemwide, Confirmed Regional or 500-mile upgrades) cannot be switched to an upgrade using miles - or vice versa - while checking in online.

If there are multiple passengers in my reservation, can I chose to upgrade only some of them with miles using EasyCheck-in Online?
All travelers attempting to upgrade who are listed on the same reservation must use the same form of payment when purchasing upgrades.

For example, if a family of four is traveling on the same reservation, the logged-in Mileage Plus member requesting the upgrades must upgrade all the passengers in the reservation.  Payment for the upgrades will be deducted from the logged-in customer's Mileage Plus account.

Requesting seats

Can I make seat assignment changes with EasyCheck-in online?
Yes, you have the ability to change or select your seats through EasyCheck-in online. After you check in online and print your boarding pass, requests for seat assignment changes may be made by logging back in to EasyCheck-in Online.

Will using EasyCheck-in Online hold my seat longer?

No, the same rules apply as for traditional check-in. You must be at the boarding gate at least 30 minutes prior to departure for U.S. flight and 45 minutes for international flights.  See additional information on check-in times.

Checking baggage

Can I check bags when using EasyCheck-in Online?
If you are traveling on a U.S. domestic itinerary or on a domestic itinerary that includes Alaska; Hawaii; San Juan, Puerto Rico; St. Thomas or the U.S. Virgin Islands you may use Check & Go to avoid ticket counter lines or print your baggage tags at the airport kiosk.  For international travel, you can print your baggage tags at the EasyCheck-in Kiosk or see a United representative at the ticket counter.

EasyCheck-in product questions

Can I add my Mileage Plus number to my reservation using EasyCheck-in Online?
Yes. When checking in you have the ability to add your Mileage Plus number to your reservation before completing the check in process.

What if individuals from the same party want to check in at different times?
EasyCheck-in Online allows members of a party to check in individually.

Can I check in for my return flight online?
Yes. If you are checking in 24 hours before your return flight depature time you will have the option to obtain boarding passes for both the outbound and return flights.

Can I cancel the online check-in process?
Yes.  If you have checked in and are unable to make the flight log back in to EasyCheck-in Online to cancel your checkin so that we may remove you as a checked in passenger for the flight.

What is the emergency form that is printed out with my documents on EasyCheck-in Online?
The U.S. Department of Transportation requires that all airlines obtain the full name of each customer who is a U.S. citizen prior to boarding any international flight originating or terminating in the United States.  Please complete this form and turn it in to a United representative at the gate for departing international flights.

What is the connection card that prints out when I check in online?
When your originating flight is on United or United Express and you are connecting to another airline, you will be checked in to your final destination with the other carrier.  When you print the boarding pass, you will be provided with a connection card.  The connection card will have pertinent information about your connection.  Please keep this with your other travel documents.

How do I complete the passport information screen on EasyCheck-in Online?
It is necessary to fill in all data on this screen for all passengers.  Please refer to your passport when completing this form.

On EasyCheck-in Online's passport information screen, what does "given name" and "surname" mean?
The given name is the first name of the customer and the surname is the last name.

I have already printed my travel documents using EasyCheck-in Online and need to update my passport information.  What should I do?
After your boarding documents are issued, you are unable to update your passport information online.  Any updates must be made by a United representative at the airport.

If I have not yet printed my travel documents using EasyCheck-in Online, can I change my passport information if it is incorrect?
Yes, from the EasyCheck-in Online Review page, click the BACK button once to return to the passport information screen to update this information.

Printer requirements

Are there any printer settings I should be concerned about?
You must use a printer that can print a minimum of 300 dpi. The majority of inkjet and laser printers fall into this category, but if you are unsure of your printer quality we recommend that you check your printer documentation. Your printer should be set to print in portrait mode at 8 1/2" x 11" using normal or better quality.

Questions after you have checked-in

What happens if I use EasyCheck-in Online but will not be able to make my flight?
If you will not be able to make your flight but have already checked-in, you can cancel your check-in by logging back in to EasyCheck-in Online and clicking on the cancel check-in option.  If you are unable to access online check-in please call United Reservations to cancel your flight or contact a United representative at the airport.

What should I do at the airport if I don’t have any luggage to check?
Proceed directly to security with your government-issued photo identification and printed boarding pass. For travel within the United States, including Alaska; Hawaii: San Juan, Puerto Rico; and St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, you must be at the gate for boarding at least 30 minutes prior to scheduled departure time.  For international departures, you must be at the gate 45 minutes prior to departure.  Reservations are subject to cancellation if you are not checked in and at the departure gate at least 20 minutes prior to departure.

Local authorities at some international airports require a boarding pass issued at the airport to go through security.  You can complete your check-in online and you will be advised if your airport requires a boarding pass printed at the airport to go through security.

What should I do at the airport if I have luggage to check?      
If you have your printed boarding document, you may use an EasyCheck-in Kiosk to print your baggage tags or use EasyCheck-in Curbside (for travel within the U.S. only). You may also check your luggage with a United customer service representative. Inform the United customer service representative that you have already checked in using EasyCheck-in Online.

What documents are required at the airport?
For domestic flights, passengers age 18 and over must present one form of photo identification issued by a local state or federal government agency passport / drivers license / military ID) or two forms of non-photo identification, one of which must have been issued by a state or federal agency (U.S. social security card).

What security measures are required for customers using EasyCheck-in Online?
Customers who use EasyCheck-in Online are subject to the same security measures as all passengers. Customers must pass through security with a printed boarding pass and photo identification. If a customer is traveling internationally, all proper documentation must be presented, including a valid passport and any applicable visas.

Troubleshooting issues & errors

I couldn’t print the boarding pass and had trouble getting the document -- Can I reprint it?       
You can reprint your travel documents by logging back into EasyCheck-in Online or by visiting an EasyCheck-in Kiosk at the airport.

What should I do if the bar code images on the boarding pass are not appearing?
This image is necessary as it contains the bar code required to check you in.  If this problem occurs, we recommend that you reload or refresh your browser.   If this does not solve the display problem, you may need to logout and log back in to EasyCheck-in Online, where you will be able to reprint your boarding documents.

Parts of my boarding pass are cut off when I print it. Is this OK?
The boarding pass on your printout must appear in full on one page in order for you to check in.  If parts of your page are missing or are printing on more than one sheet of paper, we recommend that you change your Page Setup, set your margins to not exceed 1" and print your page in portrait mode.

I received a message that I was not able to use EasyCheck-in Online. Why not?
EasyCheck-in Online can restrict check-in on certain itineraries for a variety of reasons.  Some of the reasons include, but are not limited to: upgrades, traevl with an infant, airport security, e-ticket not matching an itinerary, or a special service request in the reservation.

I lost or forgot my boarding pass. What should I do?

If you lost or forgot your boarding pass you may reprint it through EasyCheck-in Online or go to an EasyCheck-in Kiosk to print a duplicate boarding pass when you arrive at the airport.
