United activates "Apollo," its new-technology reservations system.

Sept. 1974
United adopts a new corporate identity program featuring a stylized "U" logo, new color scheme and a two-word signature (United Airlines), marking the company's first departure from the three-word name adopted in 1931.

Richard J. Ferris is elected president of United Airlines; Carlson is named chairman and CEO of United and chairman and CEO of UAL, Inc. on April 1.

Vancouver, B.C., customer service agents affiliated with the International Association of Machinists (IAM) strike United for a five-week period.

lAM-affiliated mechanics and related crafts employees stage 16-day strike at United.

Percy Wood is elected president of United Airlines; Richard Ferris is named chairman and CEO of the airline and president and CEO of UAL, Inc.

United launches its Mileage Plus frequent flier program.

James Hartigan, Sr., is elected president of United; Percy Wood is named vice-chairman; Richard Ferris remains airline chairman and CEO.

Richard Ferris is elected chairman of UAL, Inc. succeeding Edward Carlson, who remains on the board for a year before retiring. Percy Wood retires.

United launches Seattle-Tokyo service, its first transpacific route.

May 17, 1985
Members of the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) stage a six-week strike at United. Members of the Association of Flight Attendants (AFA) stage a sympathy walkout.

Sept. 26, 1985
James Hartigan, Sr., is elected president and CEO of United, succeeding Ferris, who remains president, chairman and CEO of UAL, Inc.

Feb. 11, 1986
United begins service to 13 Pacific cities after purchasing Pan American Airways' Pacific Division for $715 million.

April 30, 1987
UAL, Inc. changes its name to Allegis Corporation.







June 9, 1987
Car rental executive Frank Olson is elected interim chairman, president - CEO of Allegis and chairman of United following departure of Richard Ferris. Edward Carlson rejoins Allegis board as a director and serves until May 26, 1988.
