6. Provide Prompt Ticket Refunds
United’s commitment:
Fare rules associated with your ticket purchase determine if the ticket is refundable. Many markets offer non-refundable fares in all cabins of service. In any instance where refunds are appropriate, United will process requests in a timely manner and refund the fare back to the original form of payment. Non-refundable tickets can be exchanged for a future ticket for up to one year from the ticket issue date as long as the reservation is canceled on or before the first travel date on the ticket. Please call United Reservations toll-free at 1-800-UNITED-1 (800-864-8331) for details.

Tickets issued with fully refundable fares have up to one year after the expiration of the ticket to request a refund otherwise the ticket has no value. Fees associated with ticket purchases are not refundable. In circumstances where customers purchased tickets using a credit card, United will submit refund requests to the credit card issuer within seven business days. The credit card issuer in turn will refund the purchase price of the ticket under terms of the credit card agreement. Due to various billing cycles, a credit card statement may not reflect a refund immediately.

However, your credit card company can confirm the receipt of United's refund request. Customers who purchased tickets with cash or a check will receive a refund check within 20 business days of United receiving your refund request.

What this means for you:
If you are eligible to receive a refund from United, we will process your request within seven business days for credit card purchases and within 20 business days for cash or check transactions.


Obtaining refunds:
Prior to the scheduled travel date, you can cancel your reservation and apply for a refund one of three ways:


  • Online at united.com
  • Call United Reservations toll-free at 1-800-UNITED-1 (800-864-8331)
  • Call the number on the back of your Mileage Plus card
If you are unable to request a refund prior to the ticketed travel date, you may apply for a refund of refundable tickets online at united.com or call us at 1-800-UNITED-1 (1-800-864-8331) and select "refunds" from the "more options" menu.
