United history

Jim Goodwin was named president and chief operating officer of United, and in July 1999, succeeded Gerald Greenwald as chairman and CEO of UAL, Corp., upon Greenwald’s retirement. Goodwin joined United in 1967 as an accountant with a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Salem College in West Virginia. He worked his way through a variety of managerial positions in reservations, finance, marketing and operations, as well as officer-level positions in maintenance, international and North America before becoming the company’s president. Goodwin resigned Oct. 28, 2001, amid growing concerns about United’s financial problems and labor issues.
