United's Aircraft Scheduling Automation Project (ASAP) is archived in the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History. As part of the Computerworld Smithsonian Collection, ASAP was designated one of the year's 440 most innovative applications of technology worldwide. ASAP is an advanced suite of decision-support tools that use state-of-the-art operations research techniques and information technology to develop the optimal airline schedule. The optimal schedule matches customer demand with United's available capacity, maximizes profitability and satisfies the airline's operational requirements. Given the size of United's route network and fleet, automation is key to this process.
