Amid growing concerns about United's financial problems and labor issues, Jim Goodwin resigns as chairman and chief executive officer. Goodwin joined the company in 1967 as an accountant and rose through the ranks to become president and CEO Sept. 21, 1998, and then chairman July 13, 1999. He was succeeded by John W. Creighton, who had served on the UAL board of directors since 1998. Prior to becoming a director of UAL Corp., Creighton served as president and CEO of Weyerhaeuser Company from 1991 through 1997 and served on the company's board of directors through 1998.
