Ticket changes due to special circumstances

Weather conditions are affecting my trip -- where do I go for information regarding changes to my ticket?
Go to the united.com homepage for up to the minute information regarding inclement weather and ticket changes.

There has been an emergency or illness that is preventing me from taking the trip. What should I do?
Contact United Reservations to cancel your reservation.  You may apply the value of your ticket (minus any change fees) towards the purchase of another ticket up to one year from the original date of purchase.  The electronic ticket can retain value and be exchanged for up to 1 year from the purchase date.

Information on changing your ticket

How do I change or cancel my airline ticket?
Things to know if you want to change or cancel your ticket:

  1. Expect to pay change fees plus any fare difference.
    • Domestic travel:
      -  Non-refundable fare: Subject to change fee of $150.00 and any possible fare difference based on changes made. 
      -  Refundable fare: Subject to any possible fare difference based on changes made.  No change fee is required for refundable fares.
    • International travel:
      -  Non-refundable fare: Subject to rules of the fare.  Call United Reservations to change. Please note: Some fares cannot be changed, some you can only buy up on, some have a change fee of anywhere from $150 - $250 and then may only allow exchange before travel has started or sometimes only after travel has started.
      - Refundable Fare: Subject to rules of the fare. Call United Reservations to change. Please note: For the most part, these fares can be exchanged without penalty and are only subject to any possible fare difference.
  2. You cannot change the name on an airline ticket or give the ticket to someone else to use.
  3. Read the rules and restrictions for your ticket.  Click on "Fare Rules" which can be found on the "Create Itinerary: Review" or "Purchase page". Restrictions on your ticket can also be found on your e-ticket receipt.
  4. E-tickets: You can make changes to your E-ticket on united.com anytime prior to your original departure date. If you are unsure of the new travel dates, call to cancel the reservation by the first flight date to retain the value of your electronic ticket for 1 year from the purchase date.  Additional restrictions apply for international travel E-tickets.
  5. Paper tickets: Call anytime before your original departure to change or cancel your reservation. When changes are made, you will be advised when and where you can exchange your paper ticket for the new itinerary. If you are unsure of the new travel dates, call to cancel the reservation by the first departure date to retain the value of your ticket for 1 year from the purchase date.
  6. Change your ticket online. Most passengers can change their ticket on united.com. Some restrictions apply.

Are there fees to change my award travel ticket?
You are assessed a fee for changing your award ticket travel dates if you also change the destination and departure cities.  The minimum charge will be $100 and is subject to availability of award travel on other dates.  If you choose to change your travel dates but do not change your destination and departure city, you are not assessed a change fee. You must contact Mileage Plus at 1-888-467-0507 for domestic award ticket reservation changes.  For international award ticket reservations contact 1-888-674-4680.

I have a paper ticket and need to make changes.  What do I do?
Contact United Reservations at 1-800-United-1 (1-800-864-8331).

I booked my ticket with a travel agency or online travel site other than united.com or flyted.com. How do I change my ticket?
Contact the travel agency or online travel website to make changes to your ticket.

I have an award ticket and need to change it. How do I change my ticket?
For a domestic award ticket, contact Mileage Plus reservations at 1-888-467-0507 or for an international award ticket contact 1-888-674-4680.

I'm having trouble changing my ticket online - who can I call to change my ticket?
Contact United Reservations at 1-800-United-1 (1-800-864-8331).

Are there fees to change my ticket?

Confirming changes

I changed my ticket online. How can I confirm the changes?
A confirmation email will be sent when the online exchange is completed. Your new itinerary can also be accessed from "My Itineraries" on united.com.

I made changes to my ticket over the phone. How do I confirm the changes and access my new itinerary?
A confirmation email can be sent to you after the exchange is completed.  Your new itinerary can also be accessed from "My Itineraries" on united.com.
