United history

In 1928, Western Air Express, a direct predecessor of Western Airlines, began the "Model Airway" between Los Angeles and San Francisco. The airline wanted to demonstrate to the public that air transportation could be safe, reliable and comfortable. Stewards were employed for this experiment. A steward serves lunch that was catered by the Pig-n-Whistle (c. 1928).
