United history

From their inception, German airship lines offered their passengers onboard catering. Heinrich Kubis began contract catering as early as 1912 onboard the zeppelins. He is known in Europe as the "first air steward in the world." Kubis (right) watches as a steward serves passengers in the dining room of the Graf Zeppelin (c. 1927). Kubis was promoted to chief steward in 1929. He survived the crash of the Hindenburg, on which he served, at Lakehurst, New Jersey, in 1936.
