Star Alliance, the most comprehensive partnership in the history of commercial aviation, was launched May 14, 1997, by United, Air Canada, Lufthansa, SAS and Thai International. Brazil's Varig Airlines joined Oct. 26, 1997, and both Ansett Australia and Air New Zealand became members March 28, 1999. The global alliance offers coordinated schedules, one-stop check-in, global recognition of frequent fliers and more than 720 destinations worldwide.
